Why does my motherboard have TWO 6-pin CPU power slots? 🤔

Hey guys, I have an MSI MEG z390 ACE and when I was building it I noticed there were two 6-pin slots for CPU power instead of the normal of just one.

What is that for? Should I be using the second one? In my old motherboard my 8700K only had one power cable plugged into the CPU power slot.

Hello,

It has 2 8-pins...

Using only one is enough.

Oh yeah you’re right! I thought it was 6 but it must be 8.

I only have one plugged in now and you’re right it is working fine..I’m just wondering what the purpose of having 2 is? Is it in case one goes bad? Or is there a genuine use for 2x for some people? If so what is it?

Very high-level overclocking. We're talking LN2 and other subzero cooling methods here, where you actually can max out an 8-pin CPU power plug.

Ah ok I thought maybe that was it but I wasn’t sure. It must be for those people who use LN2 and try to go for like 7 GHz and set world records and stuff.

It is an “enthusiast” motherboard though so that makes sense.

Well I guess I’ll just leave it alone since I’m just using an AIO and don’t plan on overclocking it above 4.9 GHz anyway. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Also it may support pcie lanes not sure on that board but some pcie devices pull power from the slot if its one that has traces to pass through the cpu or the chipset that may be a benefit

One 8 pin (Assuming it isn't the high current variant) can deliver 384W. If that much power was being delivered to the chip, it would have to be emitted as heat. No AIO can handle over 384W of heat. Hence why its for LN2 overclocking.

Another use for it on some boards is powering PCIe slots, if you have multiple GPUs which only draw power from the slot. 24 pin ATX alone can be insufficient. Other boards would use PCIe power connectors for that.

You shouldn’t be getting a bottleneck at all. Your only “bottleneck” would be your hard drive unless you’re using an SSD unless you’ve already got one in which case you shouldn’t have one at all. 140fps might just be the best a 1060 can do.

If you upgrade though you should upgrade your CPU and then your GPU. Maybe like a 9700K and 2070 or an 8700K (they should be cheaper being last gen) and a 2060 or something like that.

P.S. You could actually get a 1070 Ti pretty cheap. I sold mine for $250 when I upgraded to a 2080 Ti.

is there even a consumer board that does this through the EPS connectors? i know buildzoid suspected MSI of doing this, but turns out they didnt.

and PCIe power really isnt an issue unless you do more than 2 GPUs.

I never said it would always deliver 384W...

I said if that much power was being delivered to the chip
