Will my i5-4690k bottleneck a modern GPU

So I've been thinking about upgrading my pc in general, but I'd like to wait for the next ryzen generation cpu wise. This leaves me with upgrading my GPU and then switching it over once i have a new CPU. My current CPU is an i5-4690k oc'd to 4,5ghz so im getting pretty good single core benchmarking scores. Now im thinking about upgrading my current R9 390 to a RTX 2070super or a 5700 XT but im not sure how much my CPU will bottleneck me here. I want a good GPU tho because I'll use it with my later build for quite some time. Any thoughts?

well with that decent oc it wil not bottleneck that much.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

(Also case airflow matter or if you are using Downcraft air cooler)

( You can overclock Tier C just fine, but it can get very loud, that is why it is not recommended for overclocking, same with tier D)

With those GPUs, a 1440p setup would be perfect. higher resolution = higher load on gpu = comparatively lower load on cpu. since your cpu is weaker(still solid tho), 1440p is a good option.

Right i have a 1440p 100hz ultrawide monitor so i guess that should work out, great :D

I'd say you should wait to upgrade everything at once. 

 

Your CPU is gonna bottleneck a 5700xt or a 2070 Super. Getting a 5600xt/RTX 2060 or something lower isn't really worth it in your case because the R9 390 is still a decent GPU. 

 

I'd tell you to get a 4770k but they are so expensive used it's just not worth it. Getting a Ryzen 1600 isn't worth it really because then you need a whole new motherboard and ram to go with it and it's just a stop gap upgrade. 

 

Basically, sit tight and wait until you have the funds for a full upgrade. It's gonna be a rough CPU bottleneck at 1440p but manageable if you decide to upgrade anyways. Then you'll be kicking yourself when your 5700xt isn't good enough for your upgraded CPU and Motherboard in a year.

Yeah thats the thing I'm concerned about, its actually not even about the funds its just that i dont want to buy a CPU right now because the games i want to play are very single core oriented. (flight sims) Im hoping for cheaper single core performance basically

Well if you only do flight sims you are right to not worry about core count. 

 

Check out the forums of the flight sims you play though. I do iRacing and in that case it's really just about getting a 9600k (the iRacing community probably bought half of all 9600k CPUs sold lol) or something running 5ghz for maximum single core performance. There's also a slight Nvidia bias for GPUs which may or may not apply to flight sims I'm not entirely sure. I'm sure the flight sim guys have better upgrade advice than you will get on here. 

 

Simulations are just totally different from the rest of the gaming space so what applies other places doesn't there.

then you're fine. single core on your cpu should be decent considering the OC
