Upgrade i5 6600 non k to i5 8600k?

I currently have i5 6600 non k on a z170 board, gtx 1060 6gb oc version ( already overclocked to highest settings), 2 x 4gb 2400 vengance ram sticks, 240hz 1080p monitor, im only squeezing out 60 fps on highest settings and isnt smooth. im not happy with the performance. i have a 700 dollar budget for upgrades. I would like to upgrade to i5 8600k and oc to 4.8+. keep the GPU, upgrade ram to 16 gb (2 x8gb) 3200, 250 NVME ssd, new msi z370 gaming plus mobo, be quite dark rock 3 cooling fan because i will be overclocking. ive priced these upgrades at 600 bucks. worth it ? what are some things i should consider. is this reasonable?

I'd look at the Ryzen 5 3600 setup.  Where are you buying from?

I'm buying from new egg, ebay, amazon. Okay wow 32mb cache. so its a lot newer and cheaper but does it hold up in the oc world? what the max on the chip

that 1060 has no hope here either, so you're practically replacing the entire machine

 

and if anything, upgrading the GPU first is preferred. At least get an RTX 2060, preferably RX 5700

Thats true, so will upgrading only to RTX 2060 be better then all of the other upgrades?

i use a 3600. Zen2 is not all about clockspeed, it makes it's performance in IPC - instructions per cycle

 

it goes like this, roughly

 

1 IPC at 2Hz is 2 instructions per second
2 IPC at 1Hz is 2 instructions per second

 

a lot of marketing is focused around clock speed hype but the fact is that the 3600 just with it's own auto OC enabled is faster than my 8700k st stock.

as an actual clock speed, however, you can usually see 4.2-4.4 out of it on boost

All the Ryzen IPC aside, generally speaking, Intel systems will clock higher. Ultimately, performance is a combination of both.

 

R20 Perspective: an overclocked 3600 at 4.3ghz will score around ~500 single/3800 multi whereas an 8700k at 5ghz will score ~520 single/4000 multi. This isn't really significant, although the Intel ringbus has lower core-core latency which generally translates to faster gaming regardless of CPU benchmark scores.

 

The bigger issue I believe is the lack of features. The lack of SMT on the 8600k/9600k make them a bad value. 


The 3600 makes much more sense than any of those chips. It has around a 25-30% boost in performance (when applicable) over the 6/6 chips as it has SMT, and it isn't too much slower than the 8700k yet is only $175 and comes with a cooler vs. $375 without one. The 8700k in 2017 made sense, it doesn't in 2020. Regarding the 8600k/9600k, they are obsolete in 2020.

@Blueknight why would You buy a 6c6t CPU in 2020, especially on an already abandoned platform (1151v2).

 

All You need is 3600& decent B450 mobo.

This really depends what you find acceptable for performance. 

 

You can't run 1080p 240fps. If you feel the need to get as close as possible to that, you will throw thousands at it. If you just want a smooth 1080p 60 fps you can do that for $150 or less.

there will be a point where CPU and memory bottleneck kicks in, but since you run highest settings a GPU upgrade is more prominent
