How F***ed is my CPU?

Koston

I got a Z97 (4th Gen Intel) Mobo for free the other day because “it won’t turn on”, so I went to reseat the CPU and I found a 3770K in there (3rd Gen Intel) *Eyeroll*

Do you figure it’s toast, or is there some hope of using it still? The die seems fine, but the package is damaged (clearly)

im asking instead of testing it because I don’t have a board to test. But if you guys think I could save it somehow, I’ll go get a cheap board to test it with.

pads displaced, super high likelihood that it's toast

edit: from the background, it looks like the motherboard socket is all mashed up too. Please tell this caveman you got the parts from that physical force just ain't right.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

if you can somehow bend that back and glue it flat and hope the traces aren't busted then maybe but idk

well, as far as i know, shes toast. However, if you can try it on a differnt motherboard, you might have a chance. Im no pro, but it could still work, not each contact has an actual use and given that theres only a few pins, on the very corner, id give it a shot. wouldn't keep expectations high though.

Most likely result if something critical's on those pads is it simply doesn't work.  Worst case scenario the world explodes.

Trust me, I told him he messed up. Apparently his little brother did the assembly. Clearly he's never seen one of Linus' build guides ;)

That's what I'm hoping for. I'm gonna see if I can find a schematic online of which pins do what.

I think I'm going to give it a shot anyway.

i'll get back to y'all but it'll be a while, given the current climate

i mean, theoretically, if you push it back into place perfectly... i dont see why not right?🤣 extremely unlikely, but i kinda wanna have hope today. Like i said, im no pro, but isnt the more critical contacts in the middle? like who cares if it just chopped off a few sata ports lol, i have seen some pretty bad damage be revived before so.. i want to have hope, but have have no expectation. That motherboard legit do look revivable.. if done just right.

i'd say screw it put the chip in a bench vice ( clean it first and put a paper towel around the cpu ) and clamp it flat and throw some supey glue at that sucker worth a try.

Well probably dead, maybe some mounting pressure might keep it together and working, although cpu socket looks mangled af so maybe try with a different motherboard.

Note: Seems you learnt from papa linus on dropping crap 😆

that's what I'm thinking too, I don't see why not. The package PCB doesn't seem too terribly messed up.

The reason the CPU is broken in the first place is because the motherboard is a socket 1150, and the 3770k is a 1155. I've since bent the pins back and tested it with an i3-4130, and everything seems well so far. I plan to upgrade that in the future and use it as my daily, unless I can get this 3770k working.
