PC keeps insta-shutting off

Shally

Hi folks,

So my PC never had this issue before, but when booting up half-life Alyx my PC died. It did this a few times after too, but at different points in the game. I've checked thermals and my PC never seems to be getting above 70C. Now it's started happening wth another game GTFO. After the PC dies when I turn it back on the CPU fan stops spinning and won't start spinning until after I turn it off by the PSU and back on.

I've updated the BIOS and that didn't work either!

SPecs:
3700x w/ wraith prism cooler

1070ti Strix

16GB DDR4

450w PSU

Also, my BIOS once told me my CPU temps were -55C, any idea why?

What power supply is that? I can imagine you're getting fairly close to your power limit at 450 watts.

Reckon you might be pushing that 450w unit. What model is it?

450w PSU doesn't tell us much, you didn't state what board either, and those temps aren't that concerning.   I'd be more worried if it were throttling/close to it under load.

Corsair VS450! Maybe it is the power so?

Not so great unit.

would recommend upgrading to a higher quality 550-650W model. Have a look at Corsair RMx

Would any other component cause insta shut offs without warnings?

Bad CPU[rare yet can happen], bios issues, ram issues, bad board, etc.

Yeah CPU I'm guessing is fine.

Only reason why I'm not 100% convinced it's the PSU is the weird CPU fan not turning on occasionally and the BIOS saying it's -55C!

After the pc has cooled down for an hour, run furmark and a cpu stress test at the same time. If it shuts off, its probs the PSU.

Again, that temp is fine and nothing to really to worry about plus the stock cooler is like 212 evo tier, iirc.   You have a Ryzen 3000 series CPU, and they're known for getting toasty plus your overall airflow can impact that as well backed by what fans you're using.   I assume you're also using that garbo stock paste that esentially glues the cooler to the CPU?

Yeah stock paste iirc

They could also run OCCT large data set and also set it to monitor the health of the CPU as well.   But, I doubt the thing is hitting 95c which is what the 3700x's max temp is.

Might do this so. Is there any way to monitor how much wattage my PSU is using?

Buy a kill-a-watt off Amazon by P3.  https://www.amazon.com/P3-P4400-Electricity-Usage-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU/ Only accurate way.   But, that PSU is listed as dangerous in multiple scenarios on the PSU tier list of the forum.

I'll swap PSU first and see from there so!
