Probably

used gtx 770 or 780 are much better options. You can get used 960 fairly low price now days.

Look at something modern, though, not a used and abused card like a 770 or 960. Those are close to 7 years old. Look at a 1060 or 580.

I mean it’s still a very capable CPU, while yes it is old it should handle up to a 980 ti with a modest overclock, I have a QX9650 and it can feed a GTX 760 mostly but that’s just barely a bottleneck. Considering your cpu is much faster than that you would be fine without a bottleneck.

No - but you'll likely need to upgrade the CPU too when upgrading the GPU. The 3820 is Sandy Bridge-E IIRC and that's quite old. Almost 10 years of age. Anything over a 1060/580 and you'll run into CPU limits

This ^ because i just did the same calculation with the 3820 and a 980 ti and got this.

And the 980 ti is a much more powerful card vs the 760 and yet somehow according to that site the 980 ti less bottlenecked.

You should be fine with up to a 1070/1080 without worrying too much of a bottleneck.

I posted this on another thread but if you have an i7 3820 you should sell it and buy an Xeon e5 1650v1.

The 3820 goes around $40-50 and the Xeon e5 1650v1 is $45. The advantage is that the e5 1650 has 6 cores instead of 4. So basically for a few bucks of shipping/eBay fees you can get an extra 2 cores.

If anything your 760 is bottlenecking the 3820 considerably.

Nah a bottleneck won’t physically hurt anything, a lot of people worry about the term too much. Worst thing that’ll happen is it hold back gpu performance slightly, on yours the GTX 760 will hold back performance of your i7-3820 in which case is a GPU bottleneck. A CPU bottleneck would be if you had a 2080 ti or Titan RTX.

Its always better to have a GPU bottleneck a CPU rather than the other way around, because you can lower settings to increase fps, on a CPU bottleneck it won’t matter what settings you turn down as there wouldn’t be any fps increase.

The would be a great pair, the card would be a really good jump, to be honest though, if you can afford it I would go with a gtx 1070 or 1070 ti that would be the best jump you could make.

Yeah no problem, if you want to do your own bottleneck test do this, run a game at your normal graphics settings, turn off vsync and take note of the fps. After that drop everything down to the lowest resolution and graphics settings, if the fps went up its a GPU bottleneck, if there was no change in fps its a CPU bottleneck.
