60gb ssd caching worth it?

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum, I didn’t find an “introduce yourself” section, so I am firing my question here straight away:

I am setting up a cheap general purpose/light gaming pc, and I am gonna use a 60gb Intenso sata3 ssd+500gb 2,5” (5400) hdd as storage, do you think it is better to install win10+basic software (browser, winrar, openoffice, gimp) on the ssd and redirect the rest (user’s folders, games, big applications) on the hdd, or install everything on the hdd and use the ssd as cache with intel rapid storage technology (or any better free alternative, if you know one)?

install win10+basic software would be the better option. booting from a hard-drive is an exercise in patience.

As an owner of old 60gb boot drives...they fill up way to fast so just careful how much you put on them or the speed degrades quickly.

No caching needed, but the 60gb is pretty low for boot drive, but doable.

Apps, especially browser cache grows and will eat space in the main drive.

I don't know if 60gb will hold that long.

Load your Operating System (OS) onto the SSD first, then you can partition the remaining storage (leave some additional space for Windows Updates) and utilize it as cache.

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

ok, thanks to everyone for the very quick responses, I usually go for bigger ssd with the classic setup that everyone suggested, but in this case I have to work with what I have and I was worried that using such a small ssd as boot drive it would fill up very quickly because of windows updates and browser cache (as someone pointed out) so I was hoping that caching could be a solution, but it looks like most people do not see it this way

As others stated, OS on a spinner is not something I can handle anymore. I try to keep my OS drive free of everything and anything but the OS. Keeping it under 60GB won't be easy... But having that speed is worth a try.

You can get cheap 240GB SSDs on Amazon for $35. https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU635-3D-NAND-Internal-ASU635SS-240GQ-R/dp/B07PLNNDL2/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=240GB+SSD&qid=1585249972&sr=8-3

Unfortunately where I live (Italy) ssd prices are a bit higher nowadays, and anyway I have to get this pc done with what I already have at home (it’s not for me, and the mandatory requirement is ultra low budget), anyway thanks to everyone
