It is noted that multiple cloud gaming services are limited in their choice of games on iOS devices due to apple's term of service.

However, these services are being restricted by Apple from reaching iPad and iPhone users due to unnecessarily strict rules.

 

Want to try Google Stadia on your iPhone or iPad? You can’t. Although most cloud-based game streaming services run flawlessly on Android, they’re not welcome on iOS and iPadOS. And that’s because Apple’s guidelines which restrict the distribution of third-party games via game streaming services.

 

Although game streaming is allowed, app developers can’t stream games that are not developed by them. For example, Apple allows Microsoft’s Halo-series games to be streamed from the cloud on the iPhone via the Project xCloud app. Still, the company doesn’t allow games developed by companies other than Microsoft, such as 2K Games, Activision, Blizzard, Konami, or Ubisoft.

On the other hand, Apple Arcade is allowed on an iPhone or an iPad because apps created by third-party developers are downloaded locally. This is especially hurting game streaming services because cloud-based streaming of magazines, music, newspapers, podcast, and video is allowed on the App Store. For example, Spotify can stream music from the cloud to Apple’s smartphones, tablets, and other devices without any problem.

The department of justice has opened an investigation which is in the process of checking whether companies like Apple and Google indulge in anti-competitive behavior. Spotify, Netflix, and Tile have stated in the past that Apple gives preferential treatment to its own apps and services over those from third parties. They have even stopped taking subscription payments from App Store’s built-in payment system and ask users first to use a web browser to pay for their services and then sign into their apps on the iPhone or iPad.

Thoughts: While not concern for me since I have my own PC, I would imagine it would be a bother for some apple users. Probably apple trying to get more of their userbase to switch to apple arcade instead.

do you "own" games on steam? software from the microsoft store? apps from the play store? unless you have a physical copy of something (you know, a software disc, that relic from boomer times) you don't own it. the companies you purchased the digital content from can just poof terminate your account and it's gone.

It's fine if you don't have any use for such, but you're arguably the dumb one if you can't see why others would want to use game-streaming.

Local game streaming is fine. I like being able to play on the big screen in my living room without having to drag my system into another room. When implemented correctly, it feels as good as natively gaming on my desktop. Remote gamestreaming still has far too many kinks to work out before it becomes viable for most games, but I wouldn't call it "dumb". Might not be your cup of tea, but it certainly has its place.

It's not about whether you have a physical copy, it's about whether you have full control over it. I would argue that you didn't own those disc copies of games which required you to sign on to GFWL when that was a thing, nor do you own physical copies of steam activated games. Well, you own the box - but not the game.

 

But why would you want to extend that to your physical hardware?

i.e. apple is working on their own streaming solution and they're just sowing the seeds to be sure that when they'll come their option will be the best one available.

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

I bet they will come back around like they did with steam in home streaming. It took over a year but they eventually allowed it

It's an old restriction. Possibly to prevent piracy of sorts where a third party app can stream paid content to these devices.

It's just a matter of time before these restriction will be modified/lifted to allow legitimate services like Stadia and xCloud to operate on iOS

Wouldn't be surprised.  People rush to demonize Apple in cases like this, but the boring likely answer is that Apple just hadn't anticipated game streaming when it established its policies.  There'll be a better argument to be made if Apple explicitly refuses to bend, but that hasn't happened.

While I don't care about streaming, this is absurd. No one should be dictating what services you can use to such extent. This isn't a dedicated console like Xbox or PS which is made solely to run games from one company. iPad and iPhone are general purpose devices. But if Apple makes iApple iConsole then whatever, do your thing just like everyone else.

Looks like a simple case of two main reasons here: control, and cash. Basically this is no surprise unless they have control over which titles are streamed, and they get a cut of any sales made through it. Neither of which I can see happening.
