Will a 2080 Ti have any resale value when the 3000 series is released? 🤔

GamerBlake

Hey guys!

So here is my full question:

I currently have an EVGA XC2 Ultra 2080 Ti GPU. However, sooner or later Nvidia will surely release the 3000 series (like the 3080 Ti) and I’m wondering if a 2080 Ti will be resellable when that happens? I will probably be upgrading to a 3080 Ti and I’m wondering if I could get some money from my 2080 Ti to put towards it? I know it won’t be worth the $1,199 it’s priced at now but will it even be worth like $500-$600? Or will it be worth so little that it’s not even worth selling? 🤔

Please no comments like “that’s stupid” or “waste of money”. I believe everyone has the right to do whatever they want with their own hard earned money, even if they want to spend money on things I don’t think are worth it,  and I hope others believe the same. Sure I may not need a 3080 Ti and the 2080 Ti may be more than enough for anything I do but I just enjoy upgrading my PC components and it’s fun and makes me happy which is enough reason for me to do it.

Thanks!

Look at pricing history for 1080 Tis when the 2080 Ti came out. Nobody can predict the future so your title is kind of a useless question to ask.

Nobody would say youy will resell for 0% loss or 100%. I'd say 60-70% is realistic depending on the new pricing and performance. If the new 3080 costs only 900 you most likely won't get as much as when it keeps the above 1k price point but it also depends on the feature set. If it improves rasterization by 10% and raytracing by 100% you might still get a lot becasue the mainstream use out of that card would by only slightly higerh than your 2080 Ti.

I feel silly having to explain this.

Even without the RTX capabilities it should be worth over $600, though probably not over $700-800.

The value of your card will largely depend on how much faster are the next gen cards and how much they are asking for those.

Your card is worth 20% less since it's used...so if it's 70% as fast as a 3080ti...then it's worth 70% of the new card, minus 20% because yours is used.

It won't be worthless; that's impossible.

You'll likely get a decent amount for it. Top tier cards are always desirable, and there will always be those in the used market that are looking for them.

If I had to guess, I'd say you should see prices around $700 - $800 depending on where you live, where you want to sell it, and what performance the 3000 series offers.

You simply can't say that. There are so many variables that will alter that number.

It'll definitely be worth a good bit of money but it'll be used and if you sell when 3000's come out then it wont be as top of the line. There's plenty of people, myself included, that a 2080ti would be a huge upgrade for that would pay $500 if it's in good condition.

Ah ok well I’m not expecting or asking for what I paid but if I can even get 1/2 price (~$550-$600) for it then I’d still be happy and I’d use that money and some of my own money to buy the 3080 Ti. Unless of course the 3080 Ti isn’t much better such as 10% more performance but at a lower cost.

But yeah I would never ask for even close to full price for a used item that is out of date. I think 50% is fair though.

Well its not so hard as people say in the above posts...

It actually boils down to this: when the 3000s series come up, what is the best brand new card available at retail stores that the 2080 ti can beat?

Take that price and decrease it a couple of hundred bucks (because yours is used and lets be honest it still will be expensive so the people who have money to through without caring that much will buy a brand new card anyway which means your target audience will be enthusiasts that care for bung for the buck and are willing to spend a considerable amount of money only if they gain a lot compared to a brand new card of comparable performance)

I think video cards are worse than cars.

Not an investment.

To me they have more value keeping them than selling them and at some point I put them in charity builds.

What I would do if I had only one gaming computer is build a second around the 2080 ti after getting the 3080 ti.

I even built a third computer out of old parts so I have a computer for the TV, a gaming computer and a computer for the bedroom. In the past I had a server as well.

When The 3080 tis come out I will SLI my 2080 tis and that is going to be too much fun.

They work all the time. They even beat out my 1080 tis for having less issues in games.

If Fallout 76 was moddable I would play it.  My heavily modded Fallout 4 is lots of fun to play with up to 60 feral ghouls attacking me. I could play it all day.

That's too selfish... since you have the money to through at two 2080 tis its too selfish and self destructive to use them in sli

because performance will not scale much and there are other issues + game support for sli shrinks  each year more and more..

Instead you should sell them at a nice deal price for a used item and just add some extra from your pocket and get the 3080 tis...

That way you will have a much better experience and youll help some poorer than you enthusiast to celebrate they investment spending their very tough to save money on a good card :)

The reason I can afford them is because mosts hobbies I have ever had paid for themselves.  They had to or I could not do them. I started this hobby around 1982 and by 1989 my computers paid for themselves. It took a long time but in 2005 they paid for everything.

I retired in 2018. I could have retired in 2016 but I wanted to keep my computer hardware budget so I worked two extra years to do it.

I planned for years to be able to afford to buy 2080 tis.

So if I am selfish that is fine. At least I did the work to get what I want.

The downside to working hard for what you want is that you end up thinking other people should do the same.  Silly me.

I said selfish + self destructive since you are gonna be worse with sli...you are basically shooting your foot.

but seeing the negativity and hostility in your response shows me that you deserve it...kinda like karma.

I have used SLI for years but I have never bought a card for SLI

I originally did it with GTX 980 tis for GPU rendering.

There were no cheap high core count CPUs back then so I used two or more 4 core computers. SLI did not work out for me improving workflow and work space but it was a lot of fun playing games with.

My GTX 1080 ti SLI setup is faster in SLI games than a single 2080 ti and since I still play SLI games I will probably do it with the 2080 tis until I save enough for a second 3080 ti.
