LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

FYI.

You don't need the CUDA SDK for cloud folding, just install 'gcc', 'make', the latest Nvidia driver and the FAH client. For no warnings GCC have to be the same version as the one that build the kernel.

Yeah, silly me, I just follow the quick-just-copy-and-paste installation step from google, maybe will improve next time... For now, just like they say if it working, don't touch it!

I'm curious to know if anybody has a full custom water cooled rig running on this and how thermals are performing. Participating in this event has made me want to build a new computer with a custom loop in it.

Several GPU has AIO water-cooling pre-installed (mine is MSI SEAHAWK 2080) - default fan give me around 60-65c, change to noctua iPPC 3k, and if you dont mind with the noise, it can bring down to around 50c, this is temperature with factory overclock (MSI DragonCenter will push it further clock speed around 1950 - depend on how luck you're on silicon lottery) idle temperature is 34c

The advantages using water-cooling like this is you can push hot-air directly out of case... so it doesnt affect other component, if you're using open-case I think air-cooling just fine....

I'm getting a big ass fan for my room here! yesterday while working my CPU was peaking 66 dcegrees, and it's not even folding.

My Titan V throttled to under 1250mhz. Room faces south south east, and getting baked by the sun here. Totay is going to be hotter even.

Summer is going to melt me, already sitting here with a towel over the chair.

I turned my CPU off (they don't seem to come close to pumping out the power of a GPU anyway) because it was getting close to 100c... the GPUs are running perlously close to 90c at times. This project definitely takes a toll. On the bright side, going all out I'm using around half a kW per hour... so... that sucks.

I took a CPU AIO and drilled holes through the bracket and widened the holes on my Vega64. At 200w (gpu 1703Mhz / Memory 1100Mhz) consistent draw for the last 5-6 days max temp was 61 gpu / 55 memory. Not bad at all. Especially considering my house is a warm 79f / 26c and my computer is under an enclosed desk, lol. The CPU AIO is blowing hot air into the case though, so the GPU AIO is getting that warmer air as well 😅

Awesome! and you managed to keep the shroud almost intact, just if you could keep the RADEON text it will be perfect (why you didn't stick it back?)... Damn this give me courage to void my warranty as well...

Only if you can abuse your free credit... Or have access and permission to use some of IDLE system..

Folding give you nothing (beside its give you the best feeling ever, helping someone out there, become a HERO that SAVED the world, etc) so better to spend money on REAL thing I think... At least you can use it for gaming, video editing etc...

I do have it, but the way I was trying to keep it on there wasn't good. I kept it in the box for a couple months because I was trying to figure out how to do it cleanly. This project told me to just throw it on :) . I had to make custom metal brackets to hold it on as it is normally bolted to the heat sink.

The VRM temperatures are greatly reduced with it and the fan running about 1800rpm (still quiet :) ).

Does anyone know if Project 14541 is an advanced WU or is there anyway to find out ? It's costing me hours of wasted processing time when it keeps failing that time would be better spent doing WUs that don't fail. If it is an advanced WU I'll just turn off advanced I'll lose less time even if I don't keep both GPUs busy 100% of the time.

Do you think the 3700X is worth folding on? I have a 3700x but the points compared to an RTX 2080 just didn't seem worth it. Especially with the stock fan sounding like a jet engine! 😆 I'd let it run even if the points are not great but the heat and noise put me off.

I would imagine as there are WUs that can only be done by CPU.

Don't think it makes sense to compare CPU und GPU points.

i am not using the stock cooler, i have a big (and thicc ?) be quiet! dark rock 4 pro

but yep, the CPU its not as good as my GPU but i still use it, its for a good cause
