Just curious about the details behind the WU shortage - is it that they don't have the network (or other) infrastructure to send the work out (what I assumed), or is it that there simply isn't enough work to saturate the huge amount of available processing power on the network right now? (something I've heard in passing from people who may or may not know more about this than I do :P)

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Why would anyone ever use on-demand pricing for a job like this? (Hint: they would not) Why would anyone ever use P100 GPUs for a job like this? (again, would not). Look at some of the many cloud ROI calculators out there. I know we're a PC enthusiast crowd here and love to build fun machines but there's no serious argument that holds up for on-prem server workloads.

Then give me an example, show me a machine you think make sense and how much it would cost on the cloud.

6 minutes ago, Macaw2000 said:

If you do a fully burdened cost of an on-prem workload including depreciation, it's always more expensive than cloud. Heck, that's why the cloud is a $300B market growing to $1T over the next few years.

With the cloud you are still paying for everything and more, you are paying for the hardware, running cost, man power and they also need to turn a profit, so ofc you can do the same but cheap if you have the know how. Your argue on depreciation makes no sense, the fact that you own the hardware gives you the advantage of sell it off to recoup costs, for sure google will be doing this. If you spend 10,000 on a cloud you get 0 depreciation of nothing because you have nothing, if you spend 10,000 on hardware you suffer from a lot of depreciation, but stand to get something back instead of nothing.

There are countless variables to why business grow, being cheaper is very often not the reason. In my area it much cheaper to eat at home, but billions are spent dining out, people could fix many problems with their own car, but choose to go to a mechanic. A lot of the most successful businesses are the ones that have made a live easier, even if it did come at a cost.

Both...

The network has been vastly expanded but they are struggling to produce WUs at a high enough to fill demand

Hi LTT Folders,

I am trying to setup my home desktop for Folding@Home, but I am not able to install the FAHClient software.  My computer has 64-bit Ubuntu Mate 19.10 for an operating system.

I downloaded 3 .DEB files from their website: fahcontrol.deb, fahclient.deb, and fahviewer.deb.  fahviewer and hahcontrol worked properly (after adding and enabling the Ubuntu 18.04 repositories, as it needed some files from there) but fahclient.deb doesn't install.  This is the error I get:

dpkg: error processing package fahclient (--install):
installed fahclient package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

Errors were encountered while processing:
 fahclient

.  I have a fresh (few days old) OS setup, and this is a completely home-assembled computer with no other known issues.  I have done all updates and installed any drivers that needed to be installed.

Has anyone else here encountered and solved this problem? If so, could you please share what you did to fix it?  I love working with computers, and would love to help fight COVID in any way that I can, which is why I am trying to run F@H.  But I am unable to figure this problem out.

BTW I am trying to install FAHclient version 7.5.1.

Thanks

One I used to make when I was a youth worker, is Sprite, mango juice and passion fruit juice in equal proportions, mixed with shaved ice, served with a little grenadine at the bottom, pineapple and a cherry on a stick and garnished with a twist of lemon, a few pomegranate seeds and a little umbrella

It's hot in here.

Did we fold COVID-19 to death yet?

Then give me an example, show me a machine you think make sense and how much it would cost on the cloud.

You keep forgetting that you only pay for consumption in the cloud. Do you need to scale up for a short period due to a product or update release, No problem! Then you simply scale down when you no longer need the extra resources. Please do that on-prem!

You compare a cloud product with a matching machine... That's not how you're supposed to use the cloud!
Lets say you need a Tesla V100 for data crunching. You run it monthly and only for 4 to 6 hours. What would be most beneficial? Buying the hardware and let it get dusty or simply setup a cheap preemptible/spot instance in the cloud when needed?

The more you use it the more it makes sense to have your own hardware, but even then it might still be better with a cloud solution. It all depends...

Thanks

try an older .deb 7.4.4 works for me
