Ha love it, I'm on a Elderflower gin fizz!

I'm just waiting on a stats correction, I'll just push through the update with the issues if @leadeater doesn't reply soon and everyone will have to just deal with it!

You'd get a kick out of my shop. It was a line shaft driven shop 100 years ago and was converted to 3 phase but I swear I find a box every time I turn a corner

It’s all about local code and intended use and a bunch of other stuff.  It’s why the code book is two inches thick and electricians get the big bucks.  I’m a big fan of code books.  Every word in a code book is written in blood.  Nothing gets into a code book unless someone got killed.

I was surprised how many houses in Kansas are still on knob and tube.

The (not complete) rewire of this place was over 12k. I have a few outlets that have a light socket that you would put in a 2 prong adapter.  Only a few have a neutral wire actually connected and most are still 2 prong

Sounds terrifying.  Probably lots of abandoned stuff.  Might be worth getting a guy in to trace everything, Mark it and make drawings.  My building was a single family home in the 1930’s with knob and tube that was redone as a duplex in the 50’s and as an illegal 5plex in the 60’s, then again as a legal 4plex in 2000-2005. I’ve got a friend who is a union electrician that actually took photos of one of my electrical boxes to send to his school professor because it had three generations of wire types in one box.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I remember the house I grew up in was all knob and tube. Good thing I wasn't into computers then LOL. Good thing my current place used to be a computer shop before it was renovated into an apartment.

Knob and tube is actually safe.  It’s got huge problems with things like insulation, ability to rewire, and other things but it actually works fine.  The big issue with it is it has to be built into a house in a much more fundamental way than new stuff.  It turns whole walls into what amounts to wiring insulation.  The insulator for knob and tube is air.  Lots of it.  To get rid of it you have to tear out whole walls.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

And what will you do those two to four weeks while your hardware is being repaired?

Varies depending on the problem, could vary from business as usual to greatly impacted, but considering the thousands I could save over a couple of years I would be able to afford to have spares. I could have a bridged nics, dual psu's, would like have multiple gpus, raid mirroring and multiple stick of ram, any one of these failing wouldn't cause the system not to work. The problem would be cpu and motherboard, to minimize down time you would need spares on hand and this seems very manageable.

And depending on the issue, it might not even be covered by warranty.

If its a defect from the manufacturer then its covered by law in the EU for 2 years minimum, never had any problems getting a replacements or a repair done in over 20 years, also any replacement is covered for an additional 2 years, so I can be beneficial for a part to die and be replaced in this 2 year period, things like accidental damage or theft is covered by house hold insurance.

Don't expect them to be upgraded every two years.

Using this as an example, over 2 years you could pay in the region of $37,000, hopefully the monthly price will be reduced over time so it wouldn't be quite as much as this. Let say you give yourself a $25,000 budget, I bet you could build the system in the example with all the redundancies/backups possible and have spares, even have the option of getting thousands back by sell parts if you wish, like if you wanted to upgrade.

Fuses work. I’m not sure they win, but they work.  They’re a pain in the butt but they work.  A breaker is really just a reusable fuse.

I would argue it depends on how you construct your argument;

Best case scenario your folding helps find a cure for one of the primary diseases faster which in turn means less time, money, resources and other thing spend on that particular research, which would make it electricity well spent for me.

Indeed, if I had solar panels (can't, rented council housing) I'd use as much of that electricity as possible as the feed-in rate is so pathetic compared to the purchase rate as a customer.

Although one consideration with folding is longevity of the hardware.  I'm sure running my laptop flat-out 24/7 is not doing it any favours so I will be taking that out of the equation at some point.  My desktop being a 9900K with RTX 2080 I'm not sure, GPU folding really slows the UI in Linux so might switch it back to while I'm asleep only, its been flat-out for the last two days.

I expect to at least keep folding on my NAS/server indefinitely, once the new Noctua cooler arrives tomorrow so I can throw more than 2 out of 6 8600k cores at it without baking it.  (didn't need a better cooler when those cores were idle 99% of the time)

Might leave my Ryzen laptop folding indefinitely too as it doesn't generate much heat and it only pulls 27W which I don't think is bad for 17K PPD. (sure would love one of those new Zen 2 ones)

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Being in an older city, you are lucky if the house even has a breaker box and not fuses.

Nothing wrong with fuses, much safer then breakers until somebody replaces a fuse with a coin... I'll never see a fuse blow close... breakers do fail close...

i have the 1st (R7-2700U and 2nd Gen R7-3700U) and hope dell make a XPS 15 using the new AMD Ryzen if they do i will sell the one i have to get it lol...my 2700u is great at folding my 3700u goes mental when i put load on it i think either the paste need to be redone which i will do some time this weekend or i have a bum chip and will get it fixed under warranty but don't want to have it fixed right now as i don't want to ship it off and also don't want a stranger in my house currently (though i know most of the techs in my area) but still i DON'T want to get sick lol...
