Things You Liked When You Got Into PC Building but dislike now

Well as the title says, what are some things you liked before you built your first pc or got really into PCs that you can't stand or definitely aren't a fan of now? Whether it be certain peripherals, case designs, etc...

 

So my big thing when my friend and I were getting started on building my PC I said I wanted even with my ugly parts

I built with this case in PC Building Simulator and I realized how much I would not have liked this case.

Does it count if I was only ambivalent about something back then and hate it now? If so, that'd be all the god damn cables and wires -- back then, they didn't bother me that much, but nowadays I just hate all the cables and wires everywhere so, so much and I wish everything was wireless.

Absolutely, or like I didn't mind Ketchup and Mustard back in the day but I want them all black and nice looking.

When I was planning my first build I for some reason was really into small cases and ITX builds, specifically the Corsair 250D i believe. I ended up with an M-ATX build. 3 years later I'm liking bigger and bigger PCs, not only for looks, but for its pure ease of building an maintenance (Define R6 is great). recently I built a few computers in small cases, oh how much I hate small cases.

I liked that I thought I knew more than I did.  Then I found out I knew so little except that these are like Adult Legos with SCIENCE.  So Im glad it occurred this way.

 

Oh I also thought building a PC was buying a computer from say, Best Buy, and tossing a GPU in it.  Made it Custom boi.

For me, it's all-in-one liquid coolers. Knowing that small ones are outperformed by mid-tier air coolers, and them generally being louder due to the pump. And finally finding out about mixed metals and their inevitable failure and poor ability to be maintained makes me look at them with a certain disgust nowadays.

Yes I agree, building a PC is just like a more expensive version of Legos.

On the opposite side, I used to hate water cooling and overclocking. Now here I am, with a water cooled CPU (granted, an AIO but still) and I have an overclocked FX 8320 for shits and giggles.

Windows in side panels of PC cases. Allow me to expand, what I mean is side panels that are all window, or even worse (though thankfully you don't see this much any more) side panel-mounted fans.

Big cases. I prefer uATX or smaller these days.

Tbh i dislike the actual building part of pcs.

 

After so ling and so many builds i just dont find it fun.

 

I really want a lan cool 2 but im at the point where outside of cleaning my pc every couple of months im not touching it until its time for a whole new build.

inserting the ram. back in the pentium 4 days putting it in wasn't as hard as now a days

 

 

whenever i gotta insert the ram in a motherboard you gotta use so much goddamn force, you can even see the pcb bend. it didn't used to be like that.

Flashy cases/parts, modern keyboards, gaming headsets, and this forum.

 

I would rather have a really big case with tons of expansion and airflow now than my Define C, I sold my Masterkeys Pro S and never looked back (same with my Arctis 5), and this forums has just become a cesspool of "can someone help me build a PC because I'd rather spend 10 minutes making an account and post than 30 seconds doing a fucking Google search".

Water cooling, originally i loved it but now i'd just prefer a massive heatsink/air cooling setup.  The extra 1-2 degrees just isn't worth the headaches.

I've always hated cooling fans. Back on the Socket7 boards, fans all sucked, they would wear out after a year or two and then rattle, and people just... ignored it.

 

Here we are like 24 years later and people still treat strange noises from their PC like it's supposed to sound like that. High pitch noises? clicking noises? electrical coil whine? all normal? come on.

 

It's really strange when you boot up an ultrabook, that has only one cooling fan and it makes noises like it has a mechanical drive... all coil whine.

You don't even have to click down both sides now, and you need to apply force, but not that much!?

Cable management, used to spend hours individually labeling cables, zip tying fan cables together, it was like therapy lmao, light some incense and get to cable management.

 

I just finished a build today, plugged everything in, made sure it looked decent in the front, powered on and booted windows, closed the back and side panels and called it a day.
