Magnetic Tape Storage is making a comeback and could replace hard drives in Enterprise and business storage

Forgotten_Fox

"Fujitsu has announced a new technology called Virtual Integrated File System that it says could help magnetic tape storage compete with hard disk drives as a low-cost, large capacity storage alternative... This iteration will deliver capacities up to 26.1TB (uncompressed) and raw throughput of up to 708MB/sec."

It's essentially RAID for magnetic tape storage, which could be a cheaper and faster alternative to large capacity hard drives.

That's kind of cool, but it being cheaper would only apply to the media itself, as far as I understand? I assume the devices handling those tapes would still cost an arm and a leg and thus the overall costs could still be so high as to require a really big installation before being worth considering over HDDs.

It has been coming back for a while, kind of old news in my opinion

ehhh the issue is when one file is on one side of the tape and the other is at the end of the tape not to mention fragmentation unless you do entire tape rewrites and they are only good for a few writes

For media backup, recording, or playback? Sure. Heck it's popular already.

For general consumers definitely not, random small operations would be too heavily bottlenecked. IOPS is more important than R/W speeds.

LTT did a video on this. It's more for long term storage and to be accessed very very rarely. HDD's and SSD's will still continue to dominate the mass storage market. I personally prefer HDD's for storage because if the drive dies, and the data is that important, one can always buy two new HDD's, swap the platters out of the dead one into a new one, then transfer the data from that new one to the next new one. But I might be alone on that.

To be fair, magnetic tape never really went away. Fujitsu (Who I work for) have many customers still using tape in many iterations such as LTO. With the advent of https://www.fujitsu.com/emeia/products/computing/storage/data-protection/ I am sure the market can grow further.

It will be interesting however to see how this competes with another Fujitsu product, Eternus CS - https://www.fujitsu.com/emeia/products/computing/storage/data-protection/ . What this product does is acts a a protocol converter and cache between the source system/systems and tape drives on the back end. So when writes are made from almost any system including mainframes, windows boxes, open systems etc the writes are done to fast hard drives as cache. You can then set the cache to backup to tape and depending on policies you can keep frequently accessed data cache resident. Moreover, the system can be split over multiple sites for redundancy, and the back end tape libraries can be from many different brands or, another Eternus CS using hard drive storage but of high capacity slower vault drives. I've been supporting such a system for many years now and it is very reliable and resilliant. In effect you end up with fast storage and recovery, low cost long term storage, multiple systems and types of systems can be connected with many tape types emulated and a superb redundant backup system.

It didn't go anywhere though. A lot of companies still use tape when it transitions to cold storage or meets their thresh hold for content that hasn't been accessed in a long time. You think Youtube and Facebook are backing up to SSDs? Ha no

Tape never really left, it's the de facto standard for cheap long term storage. It doesn't really compete in the same space as hard drives.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Those are some weird looking cassettes.

Our Grace. The Feathered One. He shows us the way. His bob is majestic and shows us the path. Follow unto his guidance and His example. He knows the one true path. Our Saviour. Our Grace. Our Father Birb has taught us with His humble heart and gentle wing the way of the bob. Let us show Him our reverence and follow in His example. The True Path of the Feathered One. ~ Dimboble-dubabob III

They have been that shape for many years.

If you think that is a DIY solution, you will almost certainly be disappointed when you try it. That level of data recovery requires a clean room to avoid contamination that can cause head crashes, etc.

Also, not all failed drives can have data recovered from them. If the platters get damaged or the data on them gets corrupted, your data is history. Depending on being able to recover data from a failed drive is a crap shoot at best.

The only way to ensure your data is reasonably safe is for it to exist in three separate places. Usually, this means on the computer, on an external onsite backup drive, and on an external offsite backup drive. For a drive to be a backup drive it must be kept disconnected from the computer, powered down, and stored away from the computer.

Jeannie

As long as anyone is oppressed, no one will be safe and free.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

Not only that but most often you can't just swap the platters, just like you can't just swap the controllers.  The controller calibrates the disc once and if you change any physical characteristic of the drive then the drive needs to calibrate again, which more often than not results in any data on the drive becoming unreadable.

Basically you have to be a complete tin arse to drop in platters from another drive and have it just work. If that happens to anyone on here go and buy a lotto ticket.

It has been coming back for a while, kind of old news in my opinion

yea it's been the way to back up your data for a while, it's been having a hard time catching up with growing data requirements but with improved technology and some compression to the data you are storing (50% compression is good without losing quality so long as you have a system that can process the amount of data you want to compressed within a reasonable amount of time), it's a good solution for small to median business for backing up their data.

you don't need to back up the entire OS, back up all config files and the data itself and you are essentially golden.

you can reinstall everything and restore the data and config as if nothing ever happened. this is a standard business practice in every server and data center environment you will encounter since they have multiple host systems acting as fail over, if one goes down and has to be fixed, another can take it's place during it's downtime... (this is not limited to virtualization, with the right configuration and software almost all services can have a fail over mode in the event that it has to happen)

I'd probably just get one to see if I could handle the patience required of a clean room. Other than that, all SSD for me. I'm not a fan of moving parts and try to avoid using hard drives if possible.

I use to recover hard drives for a data recovery company. A really fun job but occasionally heart breaking.

One of my friends lost all of his family pictures in a fire. Only backup was a hard drive. It was damaged and only 5 out of the thousands he had could be recovered completely.

Man that really sucks. Yeah, fire damage really does a number on drives. If it isn't the PCB (WD you can recover with a destroyed PCB, seagate and many others you cannot). Otherwise the heat warps or erases the media.

For archives, LTO and possibly many tapes will do, but as normal application, well, this I have to see. Maybe the tape will have integrated RAM or flash storage so it can churn out the data faster.

And that explains why an offsite backup is also needed.

As long as anyone is oppressed, no one will be safe and free.

One has to be proactive, not reactive, to ensure the safety of one's data so backup your data! And RAID is NOT a backup!

You mean several offsite backups. Just incase same thing happens to one of you offsites, all your data isn't lost.

I have multiple offsites, friends houses and storage units. Very rarely do I use the cloud.
