Despite what I think and believe about COVID-19 and fearmongering, I still think this is a good idea. Regardless, places like that are a cesspool for germs and disease (and BO). Better safe than sorry.

Couldn't agree more! E3 has lost its soul somewhere down the line. It's now just a wankfest for AAA companies to show-off a game years before it would finally be released - as if that is going to keep the hype in this day and age.

I think showcases like E3 tend to be better remote viewing experiences, rather than live conventions. This is a chance for the organizers to really offer a huge change-up in the right direction.

This has nothing to do with the Beer Bug. A bunch of major companies had already pulled out and something had been brewing for a while. 

 

This is pretty big news and they're using the current media-produced panic as cover.

A single booth at these events usually hits the hundreds per sq.ft. Any reason they can get to not attend is one they will take.

Well that is a bit of a stretch, but it is true that more and more companies were pulling out due to lack of interest. Sony and Nintendo would no longer be there.

 

But you would still have Microsoft, as well as all the big publishers such as EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Activision, etc. announcing their new games.

 

But I think this is a good thing for E3, and a blessing in disguise. They can use this time off to really think about where they go from here. What they can do to get people excited again, and how to attract interest. They were going down the wrong path, trying to become more an "influencer" event, and hopefully they can see that and correct course.

Crazy to think 10 years ago come hell or high water, E3 and all the other shows would've went on without hesitation. This is just the "powers that be" pushing their new agenda onto the world. I'll miss the 3 video game press conferences at the show, but like with anything in life... all good things come to an end.

Companies were already pulling out and noticing no impact at all on their profits (apart from saving by not spending money on E3)...so even without the virus it wouldn't have been a surprise to me.

It's a shame. E3's been tumbling downhill for years, but I still have a soft spot for it.

 

My hope is they can take a year or twos break (with or without viral issues), take stock of why there's increasing negativity towards the event. Then come back in 2022 with a really good show, getting folks, consumers and exhibitors, back on board.

Joking aside, E3 hasn't been exciting the past years. I mean, those devs will showcase a bullshotted games on ultra settings and in the finale versions, they are either half-finished, downgraded or both.

This is not an "agenda" or political decision. This is a public health decision based on not spreading a communicable disease / pandemic. 10 years ago they would have done exactly the same thing.

 

In fact, there was the SARS epidemic in 2003, and because it was less contagious than COVID-19, they fortunately were able to contain it. If it would have spread as much as COVID-19 is now, they would surely have cancelled public events.

SARS was also much deadlier so if anything there would have been even more reason to cancel E3 if it had been this contagious.

Believe that if you like. This looks just like another ruse just as the Ebola, zika and SARs. After a couple months it will be forgotten just like the rest of the epidemics. It looks worse now since we're in the day of social media and things blowing up quickly. But to each their own.

SARs had 8,000 cases worldwide and Ebola 30,000. Covid-19 is already at 125,000 cases after a few months. Just to give a bit of perspective.

Every E3, CES, PC Expo, etc. has a large portion of people getting sick, and looking at the statistics this new strain isn't any worse than anything else that's happened since 96.

The most I do is wait for E3 to be over, and then click through the streams to see all the game announcements. Fuck watching the whole show, I couldn't care less. It has also been going downhill with less new stuff being shown and more things like game updates and freaking mobile games.
