My First PC Build! Any Tips You Would Like To Share?

KBAnthis

Today marks the first time I will be putting together my own PC from parts I have purchased. Thanks everyone to tuning in. Do you have any tips or advice you would like to share? Anything that sticks out when you read the title? The PC will be for workstation tasks and not used for gaming. Here is the layout. The total after the sales that were taking place earlier from posting time was about $880.I shall be reusing some keyboards and a mouse; and also a monitor.  I have already got the parts and ready to go... any advice?

Build it out of the case on the mobo box to see if it POSTs and then put it in the case.

Don't have any drives except the one you're installing Windows on plugged in while installing Windows.  Plug them in after that install is complete.

Double-check the manual for the correct slots to install the RAM into. It's frequently the second and fourth slots (when counting the slot by the CPU as slot one).

Yes, a flashlight.. thing that you can wear on your head. Like a coal miner lol.. whats it called again?

Other than that, take your time to build it. check that things are seated properly.. so that you don't have to troubleshoot all the connections and stuff.

You got a nice machine there. ?

I should seriously get one of those. Often times I have to bite on my flashlight when I need both hands to work on something.

I believe they call that a "Head Lamp".

I forgot. For good measure and because Windows not always installs perfectly I always open a command prompt and run System File Checker as soon Windows is up and running.

Just open start menu >> search for CMD >> open with administrative priviligies

Then just type

SFC /SCANNOW

Press Enter and let it finish, wont take too long on SSD.

Head lamp ? right, thanks. Well I had to bite my phone and hold my head at a funny angle when I built this machine. Not doing that again...

Awesome thanks everyone! I was looking at the motherboard and noticed it has 2 slots for an nvme m2 ssd. One comes with a removeable heat sink with a sticky thermal tape underneath and the other is bare. Do you think it would be smartest to use the bare m2 slot which is further away from the CPU or to use the spot with the sticky tape. I ask because I assume the thermal sticky tape heatsink is for a pcie 4 ssd. Is this correct? Would it be wise to use the other nmve 2 slot and would I suffer any performance if Windows was on it, further away from the cpu? Or just stick it on and attach the heatsink with thermal tape? I bought this board to try and give myself some future proofing but am a bit stumped on what to do with this. Perhaps just not re attach the heat sink and save it for if and when I do get a pcie 4 m2 nvme ssd That is if I ever do... I may be over thinking this one. What would you do?

Overthinking Either slot is fine for your needs.  Build is fine, you've hashed this out enough in previous threads.

Just build it,and enjoy.

Yes that is what I figured. I am just trying to visualize it and by practicing through the forum as once I make a mistake it can cost money. I have a question. When I go to tighten the stock cooler amd fan from the amd ryzen 5 3600  it seems that it has tension screws on it that start to make some noise once the are tightened down. Should I just stop once the tension screw is under pressure? It doesn't seem like I should tighten it further, and increase pressure on the tension screws. Feel free to comment if you have experience with this on the stock cpu cooler from ryzen 5 3600 and what worked fine for you. Seems to be most logical to tighten just enough to where the tension springs are secure and there is no wiggle room and to not overtighten them, I can't seem to find much literature on this in the manuals.

Well so far so good. I am still waiting on the NVME SSD to show up in the mail but got the rest of the machine together. The only problem I have is that I am using a TV currently and no monitor through an HDMI cord. I turned the computer on and got it into bios which worked but the screen had a couple of lines breaking the image up here and there sporadically and there was a lot of green specks inside the BIOS screen which all seemed out of place. Does anyone know what is causing this and is it something to be concerned about? I have 2 sticks of RAM installed but it shows it running at 2666 which I need to change to 3200. Not sure what it could be I am going to try to do some research. Anyone know what is causing the green specks peppered through the screen and the lines? I will the SSD on Saturday and have the Windows 10 USB ready to go for then,

Well it turns out I was using the wrong screen resolution from my older laptop, when I switched HDMI slots it went to 1080 and all is fine, will update Saturday! Also I could tighten down the fan module till it was snug, the tension from the springs had me confused as to how much to torque the screws, all is good so far!
