Could i run a home nas with a ryzen 1200?

I want to builld a NAS as cheaply as possible and with new parts if possible. Could i run it with a ryzen 3 1200 and 16gb of ram?

You can run it with a Pentium.  You have more than enough juice for a file server.

Yes, I'm sure it will be great with that build. I've seen people do it with a Raspberry PI and it was good enough for them.

It's generally a good idea to have something with video output so I'd get a 2200G instead. 

 

Also for just 3TB, why not get a small low powered synology or even use your routers NAS functionality (if it has one)? Using a full system for one hard drive Is kinda excessive.

Absolutely, if anything that's overkill. You could do it with something like a raspberry pi.

Most likely, yes.  basically any computer can be a NAS, since an old Optiplex was a standard office PC years ago... it's still able to move files.

 

Age doesn't matter.  If it had the ability at one point, it most likely still does for what you need.

With Linux you could run a NAS on quite literally any computer (within reason). The hardware you've listed is well in excess of sufficient.

You can do it with a ryzen 1200, video card is not an issue as you can easily buy a video card on ebay for less than 10$.. certainly cheaper than difference to 2200g

There's also 3000g or even those athlon 200ge which may be very cheap on aliexpress or ebay (but they're often sold without coolers)

If you need cheap then look at the 3000G or Athlon 240GE which includes graphics. They dont come with coolers so you'd need to factor in a cooler as well. 

At the more expensive range there is the 2200G/3200G and the Intel i3 8100/9100 which both include graphics. The advantage of the Intel CPU's is if you want to run a Plex server, it can use the Iris Graphics for hardware transcoding if you need that. 

 

You don't need 16GB ram, you could go with 8GB comfortably.  You could even go with 4GB if its just a simple fileserver with possibly Emby/Plex
