laptop with best airflow?

i asked google this question and it gave me links to cooling pads but thats not what i want. iv been wondering this question for a while because as laptops get slimmer their cooling systems get less effective, before i bought my laptop [hp elitebook 840 g5] i was lugging around my old hp pavilion m6, the laptop was chonky but had the benifet of cooling because it had the chonky heatsink to compliment with the chonky body. but laptops just dont have that anymore, i opened the back cover up on my elitebook, expecting to see a wide heatsink and pipe since it was thin but also burdening the task of cooling a quad core i7, it turns out it was just a small heatsink with a small and depressing to look at heatpipe, so what laptops are out there that still care about their cooling without being advertised as game grade?

Basically none. Because that’s no longer a concern. Most ultrabooks use 15W processors and integrated graphics. You don’t need significant amounts of cooling for those.

thats a shame, it really does bum me out when i plug my laptop in and all cores go above 160F [yes yes ik i use F] never was a problem with my mega chonk laptop

160F is only like 71C which is chilly for any laptop under any load. (Being plugged causes a lot of heat production)

are cpus just made better now? i recall getting nervous when my old laptop would reach almost 140F

One thought might be a 16” MacBook Pro with the 6 core processor and the smaller video card.  They  have bigger hotter stuff but there’s a decent chance they use the same cooling solution as the larger stuff. 
 

This may apply to several laptops actually.   Find a model that has several processor option and choose the smallest one that uses the same cooling of the larger chips.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

aren't macs like notorious for having bad cooling systems?

Most are.  Apparently the 16” MacBook Pro specifically is something of an exception.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

should i just get a cooling pad if i dont want to get a gaming laptop for the comfort of not worring about it overheating

You mean those plates with fans on them you put a laptop on top of?  My understanding is they don’t work very well.  Undervolting might work better.

No CPUs are the same as ever. Most have max temps of 105C but throttle at 90C. Technically they can operate up to around 140C but technically and in practice are different things.

The 16in has a better cooling system and I think is heavier or thicker than the 15in as Jony Ives is finally gone

I'd have to say I'm curious to know myself, the Alienware Area 51m looks like its got a lot of cooling but I don't know of any real testing on it, or any other tests that focused specifically on laptop cooling. And as for cooling pads, some tests show that propping your laptop up on doorstops is more effective than a cooling pad with fans.

 

The issue here is that Laptops are being built with cooling based on the low TDP wattage of a chips base clock, and CPUs are built to turbo up, and as laptops aren't cooling enough they hit the thermal throttle wall. 

 

A typical customer may not run into these issues but it is a problem with gaming laptops for sure.

 

I've got a Quanta NL5E laptop running a i7-8750H and RTX 2070 and it throttles back. I've put better cooling paste on it and undervolted the CPU and GPU but there's no avoiding the thermal throttling and it just feels inefficient and I dont know... wrong?

I'm an IT System Admin with 15+ years worth of XP, plus I've been tinkering computers since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver, so I usually know what I'm talking about.

from what im kind of observing, if the laptop isnt dedicated to gaming and performence, it seems like manufactures rely too much on the thermal throttle feature to keep the laptop cpu from melting. it really would be nice if more manufactures took consideration for cooling because while it isnt damaging the laptop to have it run hot, its still taking out alot of performance from the laptop
