Now everyone is playing with cameras - Samsung galaxy S20 revealed.

Comes in S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. Screen resolution of wide 2K@120hz. Maximum core clock of 2.8Ghz or 2.7 Ghz depending on if it's Qualcomm or Samsung. S20 has a 64MP camera while the ultra gets the 108 as well as a 10X zoom camera with 100x digital zoom. Also does 8k24fps videos. 8-16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 4000-5000 mah battery. Base model is $999 and the high end is $1699

Thoughts: Its 2020 and this phone still uses QC2.0 for charging and then I have to pay such a premium just to text people? I will have to think thrice about this one.

I think these phones are really solid, and the S20 might very well be me my next phone, though the S20+ if it's not too big in the hand might be a close contender.

Agreed about the charging, though the S20's wireless charging is as fast as my S8's wired. It's nice to see unlike Huawei, they dialed back the curve on the display instead of trying to wrap it around the entire side of the phone.

They'll likely still sell loads of these, even at these prices.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of price jump we see with OnePlus this year, since they'll be using the same display and SoC.

These prices are really getting to be too much, neat cameras and display though. 

I don't mind having a bezel, the hole punch while better than a notch is still a hole in the screen, and no headphone jack not even on the largest S20 Ultra is ridiculous.

Thats part of the reason why prices are being jacked up too. The phones after the bezel trimming fad of 2017 have been pretty much the same unless you care about cameras. You can get a s8 or iphone x for pretty cheap second hand/refurb and be set until folding phones develop and become more reliable.

 

These camera tumors are getting crazy. Just looks ugly honestly.

What fascinates me is that all of Samsung's 2020 flagships cost at least $1K.  There's no "S20e" to offer modern specs below that mark.  If you want something less pricey, you have to buy one of last year's models.

 

The kicker is that Apple is likely to still have a model around the iPhone 11's price point in September, so this could be a lopsided fight where Apple scoops up would-be Samsung buyers.

I bet that 8K looks like shit also 16gbs of RAM is just a waste. Maybe optimize your OS and apps instead of adding more memory upping the price and power usage

You're missing the point though. The price is still absurd even though they're going to sell a boatload of them. That doesn't mean that the pricing isn't stupid.

It's not actually 2k at 120 Hz. 120Hz is only available at 1080p and you're stuck at 60 Hz at 2k.

Flagship phones being expensive doesn't surprise me. All most people need is an A series. If you want something higher end? Yeah, it's going to cost money.

Look at the spec. These are approaching what laptops have, and are priced accordingly. One could say that, given the amount of use they see, they're even more useful than a laptop, thus command a higher price. If you're simply calculating value based on BOM then you're doing it wrong.

Kinda surprised there’s no “affordable” model. It’s been getting a bit harder still for me to justify spending 4 figures on a phone these days. 

 

Cameras look pretty nice for a phone though. (Just remember that this isn’t a GFX competitor even though the sensor is almost identical in resolution. They’ve got different philosophies)

LPDDR5 RAM, that's pretty cool, not gonna lie, Samsung's the industry first to use DDR5 RAM in their products as far as I know.

120Hz screen is dank

Camera looks very good, 8k@24fps lol

 

The price *is* quite big, although I would love to own a full spec S20 Ultra. But until I can save up $3000 for a gaming PC and a $2000 phone, I'm going to have to stick with my S7 and i3 dual core lol

I'm curious what will be the quality of 8K video because S20 and S20+ use the telephoto for 8K recording.

The S20 Ultra is quite awesome though. Great for more flat display, sucks still punch hole cam. 8K recording and 1TB model not offered is strange I have to say. Though impressive camera setup on it. Could've included faster charging too.

I'll wait and see what others will reveal soon.

No idea where you live. But where I live, anything in the $1000-$1500 price range is going to be a 20-30 year old pile of junk with body damage, rust, >200k miles, and going to cost more to keep it running than the car is worth. 

 

Still won't disagree that phone prices have gotten absurd though.

I thought the same thing, you can pry my wired headphones out of my cold dead hands. Then I got a pair of Airpod Pro's to try out the hype. I won't be moving back to wired headphones for anything but my desktop any time soon.
