New RTX 2080-S vs used GTX 1080 Ti? (for up to 1440p 120 FPS + eventually VR Gaming, Adobe applications & editing 360° pics/vids)

UPDATE: I have decided against buying a new 2080 Super. I am scouting around for a used 1080 Ti and hoping that I manage to snag the €330 Strix Gaming OC that I happened to find.

I'm planning to build a PC with a custom CPU+GPU loop over the next few months:

While I can afford a 2080 S, I'm wondering if a 1080 Ti would be "good enough" for my needs. I don't foresee myself needing / using any ray tracing applications (unless those cores have any performance benefits in VR games). I believe that with my current (albeit laptop-restricted) usage patterns, I'm not sure how far I'll be able to push a decent GPU. I've literally never used anything more powerful than a GTX 965M (the chip my current MSI GE62-2QE has) so I have no idea what to expect.

Used 1080 Ti-s range between €450 (Gigabyte Aorus) and €750 (Asus ROG Strix) out here while the cheapest new 2080 S costs €740 (Asus Dual Evo OC). I can ask a colleague to ferry a 2080S from USA to save about €100 or so (I don't know where to look for second hand 1080 Ti-s in USA). Opinions?

Use case:

Spoiler
  • Gaming: 95% of my current gaming is Elder Scrolls Online. I'll play Overwatch 2 once it's out (and perhaps Overwatch as well if I can find it in my soul to log back in). My PCs have never been good enough to play "nicer", "prettier" games so once I have a better system, I might try other titles out. I haven't thought about it much and it's completely possible that I will stick to ESO and OW2. I won't be streaming. 1440p 120 FPS would be nice - I'm not fussed about 4k.

  • Editing: I'm a hobby photographer. I use a LOT of Photoshop, Illustrator & Premiere Pro. Once I have a better 360° camera, I would like to get into making VR tours & VR videos.

  • VR (eventually™): Games like Beat Saber intrigue me. I would like to try them out, but I'm not sure if I want a home VR rig. Having a system that would be powerful enough to run games like that in the future would be nice.

This is very attractive, at the same time the risks of getting used will get higher when deals are this good.

I prefer the 1080ti, 1st gen RTX implementation on the 20 series isn't the best thing ever (as expected) but the price is rather steep. 2080S is only mildly faster than the 1080ti in most situations that do not use RTX, apart from games that are well optimized for newer APIs like DX12 (Pascal's (10 series) DX12 implementation is not so much hardware than it is software, which means reduced efficiency in turning compute power to frames).

I wouldn't spend the money on a 2080S when the new cards are so close. You'll lose way too much money.

The cheap 1080Ti makes the most sense IMO.

Did you factor in taxes in that 100 Euro savings?

I mean in regards to importing something from the US. You'll be charged duty, tax and other import fees.

Not unless the product in question is over €400.

Stuff that is used is generally not even considered :D

I was in the same boat. Was gonna go drive to microcenter and pick up a 2080s but a 1080ti for about half the price ended up being a better deal right now.
