Why whatsapp exists?

I don't understand something... As far as I know both whatsapp and messenger belong to Facebook, right? So, I don't understand why they have 2 similar apps? Why I should use Whatsapp while I already have messenger?

Oh, I thought messenger was first than Whatsapp.

Okay, two more questions: Can you have whatsapp without Facebook? And can you have messenger without Facebook?

You certainly can. I don't use Facebook myself, but I use Whatsapp.

WhatsApp and Instagram can be used without a Facebook account.

You need a phone number to use WhatsApp tho.

Facebook is mass sharing social media platform, if you want to reach a lot of people with a lot of one way content that takes up a lot of data (publish and view) then go there.

Whatsapp is a bit more flexible, it can be good for text or small media sized announcements to very large groups or smaller collaborative groups.

Both have a place and do things the other isn’t good at.

What's App should just die >_>

Honestly the fact it only mirrors phone rendering the desktop client nearly useless alone already is enough reason to hate it, everything about it is just very unsatisfying. Sadly that's what the majority in my country uses so there's no way around it...

Still wish Telegram would become the norm.

I know, but I wasn't comparing Facebook to whatsapp. I was talking about Facebook's messenger, which is a separate app in phone than Facebook. Both messenger and whatsapp give you same abilities: text-chat and calling to your accounts. In both you can create groups.

Facebook and messenger are two completely different apps in phone, even though they both belong to Facebook.

I think most use Facebook messenger as a side part of Facebook so they don’t have to break out into WhatsApp.

Whatsapp is when you don’t need to be Facebook friends but need info.

I don’t use Facebook but I organise so many things through Whatsapp like social gatherings, school stuff, sporting activities etc.

I can see why people would have both as you avoid so much of the Facebook issues with Whatsapp and the audience of your communications is different.

In Facebook you communicate to that other group of people in a very different t way.

As I recall there was a rumor when Facebook bought Whatsapp that they'd be merging it with Messenger, and lots of people were angry about it.

I've always hated switching platforms. Even when I was a kid. I refused to create a Xanga, or any other social media account for a long time. I didn't create a MySpace account until my friends pushed me into it and it seemed like it was sticking around. Then like a year after I did, everyone was switching to Facebook. I kind of hate Facebook now (mostly because of the crappy algorithm they use for sorting, so I see the same stuff over and over). I doubt I'll cancel my account until they die.

So the reason it exists is because of people like me, who hate the idea of switching platforms.

Make sure to quote or tag me (@JoostinOnline) or I won't see your response!

The theory is that WhatsApp at least at one time had much better security and data privacy that messenger.  It was used by people who felt messenger was u acceptable data security wise.  The mere ownership of WhatsApp by Facebook taints that at least in concept.  Whether it is tainted in fact as well is unknown by me.  It is something I would kind of like to know.  It is not impossible that WhatsApp has grown as bad as messenger formally was, in which case it may need to be abandoned as well.  Not sure for what.  If it’s security has been unmolested by Facebook though it is possible it is still viable.

I don't see why it's a problem that it mirrors the desktop-client. Why should it have a different UI or something for phones, when the UI works fine as-is both for desktops and for phones and is therefore easier for the non-technically-inclined audience to use?

Honestly, a good point to make is the fact that WhatsApp is more formal and does not require Facebook, just a phone number. It makes for a great messaging platform in a work environment due to this. I use WhatsApp without Facebook and I intend to keep it that way lmao.

EDIT: I completely forgot to add the fact that security is a great thing in WhatsApp too, you can export the whole conversation (If needed) into a .txt.

This is an incorrect mindset, Whats App is widely used for work purposes as a quick communication and images exchange... Nowadays even more than e-mail.

Having the access on desktop is crucial for workflow and the requirement to force always online on phone is a huge inconvenience that is not justifiable, saying they don't have to improve their service because is "fine as is" is only plastering advancement.

Telegram is a far better service with a far better and more robust software, it does deserve the praise rather than trying to justify something inferior.

I would argue Facebook messenger should just die.  If WhatsApp was tainted sufficiently by the problems of Facebook messenger it might need to die too and something even harder to datamine put in its place.  The problem has never been functions or GUI, though those are reduced.  The problem is the data mining.

There are many messaging platforms I think because as they get more popular they get more badly abused by the owners.

it seems to be a predator/prey situation where the owners are the predators and the users are the prey.   The more people that use a messaging system the better the system works but also the more “juicy” the system is for predators who eventually begin to exploit it at which point the user base scatters for another safer less abusive message system.  The result is fracturing of message systems.  Some users choose deliberately obscure heavily protected systems with few users hoping they will avoid attack.  Owners add features to systems hoping to lure users back to often (but not always) compromised systems.  Less compromised systems tend to have fewer features and smaller user bases.

I don’t even mind how big Facebook got, though it may be that it’s just something I don’t know much about.  What bothers me is uncontrolled data mining. It can be used to control people and search out ready victims and that bothers me a lot.
