AMD swaps long time partner Ferrari for Mercedes-AMG F1 deal

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team is delighted to announce today a multi-year partnership with high-performance computing leader AMD.

Quote

The new partnership... will see the AMD logo on both sides of the cockpit of the team's 2020 car, on the drivers' race suits and team clothing and on the engineering station.

Quote

The new partnership will also see the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team pilot the use of AMD commercial solutions, including AMD EPYC server processors and AMD Ryzen PRO laptop processors, to optimize the team's various workstreams.

Quote

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team will run its 2020 F1 car, including AMD branding, for the first time on Friday, February 14, 2020.

This comes as a bit of a shock announcement, but not in a groundshaking way. AMD have sponsored Ferrari for as long as I've been watching F1, and seeing them move over to arch rivals Mercedes is completely unexpected.

I doubt this is going to bother the F1 community much though. Mercedes is merely looking for the best processors for their work flow, and a team constantly at the top of the sport needs that horsepower.

AMD has been a regular Ferrari sponsor back into the early 2000s, so this is kind of an interesting turn of events. AMD has had a spot on the Ferrari nose for a while, so AMD is dropping a good chunk of change while also switching teams they're sponsoring.

Slightly related, but Radeon's generally superior Catia performance is due to the fact that F1 teams favor Catia for part design. (Wings, Body Panels, that type of stuff.) So if you're ever wondering why Pro workloads seem to be wildly all over the place for results, that's part of why. Also related is that one of AMD & GloFo's major investment groups also owned a large stack of Ferrari, which is part of the reason for the long relationship. It appears Mubadala doesn't have much stake in AMD anymore, which would explain AMD's ability to change who they're sponsoring.

A computer hardware company teaming up with a racing/richman car company... can someone explain to me how such a partnership came to be? It seems to be such a stretch in scope of type.

People are going to hate me for bringing up this example, but this pretty much feels like a partnership between Lockheed Martin (a military contractor) and Ferrero (a company that makes chocolates and related sweets).

Read the community standards; it's like a guide on how to not be a moron.

It's advertising, it doesn't need to have something to do with racing - what matters is that people see it and associate it with a (hopefully) winning team.

I don't think military airplanes are made of chocolate.

F1 cars, on the other hand, are essentially designed and tested by computers these days.

It is mostly an advertisement deal, though. It's not like Ferrari was forced to run its simulations in Bulldozer back in the day...

Based on those two stats I know which car I'd rather sponsor when my company is enjoying success.

Not true!

All F1 drivers smoked Marlboro cigarettes to boost their performance in the 90s!

To be fair who wins isn't that important - a lot of people like Ferrari regardless of how they end up performing in the races.

I've been watching F1 for about 15 years. I know people like Ferrari. I like them too (not as much as McLaren though). Just having them not get beat by even Red Bull would be great let alone another top car manufacturer.

I doubt AMD cares a whole lot about which team is more liked. Merc gets the wins. That'll give AMD exposure they want. It does seem odd to me that they've chosen now as their time since there's rumours that Merc is going to quit. Sure, there's the "wholesome" aspect of sticking with Ferrari even if things aren't going too great but I imagine they want to be associated with success and Ferrari ain't it chief (well not right now anyway. 2021 please be good).

Didn't acer and Ferrari make laptops a few years ago.  I also recall Porsche portable hard drives.
