GigaByte GA-H81M-DS2 (rev 2.0)

Hi,

My PC is quite old. Below are the specs

Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2

Sapphire RX460 Twins 2GB

16GB RAM

Pentium G3220 3.0GHz + stock cooler

550w PSU

1TB WD HDD

any recommendation for upgrade without botlenecking the system?

Would prefer if I could retain the mobo since it its still not showing any problems issues.

You looking for used parts or new ones? I have to ask because PC parts in Malaysia are pretty expensive.

If you have the budget you should upgrade both the CPU and GPU. The CPU is especially outdated & underpowered for modern gaming.

The mobo does not have much vrm.  I’m not sure how much more cpu it could take.  it’s lga1150 h81
the current cpu is 2/2 3.0ghz @52w.

there are some low power haswell i5s and i7s with s as their last character that are 65w. It would double your cores.  I got no clue what that motherboard can take though only that there doesn’t look to be much VRM on it. They still don’t push much over 3ghz though.

the new cooler might do well to be board facing. That VRM could heat up fast.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

If you're on a budget and don't mind NOT playing on high settings for a lot of modern games, then the i5 4460 is fine imo. With that CPU you probably want to get like a 1060.

On Shopee, a 4460 usually starts at around RM300, and a used 1060 (or equivalent) will set you back by another RM500 or so. You could probably get better deals on Carousell or Mudah.my,  I generally prefer the former. I got my 750 Ti for RM150 on Carousell, whereas on Shopee it would've set me back by RM250 or so.

so would you recommend a new mobo as well??

You needn't get both at once.

You could get the CPU first, and maybe after a few months (or even longer) get a new GPU.

The 4460 and RX460 will still be a good combination for light gaming.

There are quite a few decent 4th gen processors out there. I have an HTPC with an i5 4570 on an H81 ITX board that's done well for most things, and especially older games. An RX460 and 4460 combo will be good for most games up until fairly recently. Haswell stuff is still pretty good, just be aware that if you get a bare processor that Pentium cooling solution will not be adequate.

My Current Setup:

AMD Ryzen 5900X

Kingston HyperX Fury 3200mhz 2x16GB

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

Arctic Fans 140mm x4 120mm x 1

the motherboard apparently only supports up to 4th Gen CPUs.

Since you're using a rx460 you may go with a v3 xeon e3 1220/1230/1231 instead. Just check if they're supported by your mainboard (usually yes).

okay so finally i upgraded to 4690k with stock cooler. (since i got it cheap at RM300 @ 75USD) :D

is it wise to use aio or is aio is even supported on my current mobo?? 🤔

if it does, which port should i plug the pump into?molex?

a 6gb gpu will be coming soon..

now my dilemma is will the mobo support the gpu full performance or it will just choke the it? since its an old mobo anyways..
