"Old" Tech that You must Keep

What is "old" tech either for your computer,  or otherwise, that you must keep?

 

I have to keep my CD/DVD drive in my computer because I either have a class that requires a dvd, or someone wants me to rip their dvd.

Basically the same for me. I'd never get rid of my old portable DVD player.

 

Also, I would NEVER get rid of any old device with a touchscreen now that I use TouchPortal.

I try to keep an older gen platform around. My X79 rig won't be going anywhere any time soon.

Definitely an optical drive. I'm ripping a new CD right now and have six more to go after that. I won't own a machine without an optical drive.

I have a lot old techs that I keep :

 

- Floppy drive USB

- DVD-RW writer USB

- Blu-ray writer USB

- US Robotics 56k Faxmodem

 

And many others things.

Just checked out TouchPortal. That seems supremely useful. Time do dig up some old android phones

You say that, but I wouldn't be surprised if that changes.  I'd consider it wiser to get a USB optical drive so that you still have that option without forcing yourself to make compromises on the PC design itself.  I mean, you've basically ruled out modern laptops with that statement!

I have to have a case with a slot for a bluray drive on both my gaming rig and my mediaserver... My car at the moment is a little older and although it has bluetooth built in, it's not capable of music streaming and only has an iPod aux input.

 

My mediaserver also has an old Microsoft Media keyboard 1.0A that has a PS2 plug on it... at the moment my MB on that old system has a legacy socket on it... But this year will see me rebuild it as it's still running W7 Pro.

Considering my advanced age and failing health, the notebooks I already have may very well out live me.

i have to keep a load of old proprietary ports for my family's useless cameras they refuse to get rid of. in fact when i get my new pc i will have to keep it around!

I'm a bit of a cable hoarder, regardless if I think I'll need it or not. 

But the only "old" tech that I have is a USB CD/DVD drive/burner. When I switched to my Node 202, I got one for those just-in-case moments of having to burn something, or to access some data from another old CD/DVD.

Outside of that, there's nothing I really have that I'd classify as "old" anymore.

I keep most of the old computer parts I have because they're too old and weak to be used in a PC, but too new to be worth anything to collectors. And then there's stuff like DVD/CD drives and old hard drives because I don't know when I might need them. I actually have an IDE drive made in 2002 that's still running strong, and I use it from time to time as a temp drive for files too big for a flash drive.

I tend to keep my last two systems.  The old one as a backup.  This last on has lasted so long though that my “backup” is old indeed.  An old q6600 sitting in my basement.

So I guess I'm kind of a hoarder too, but most of what I have is still useful as well.

I have most useful stuff in a dresser that I'm using as my desk extension for storage.

Excuse the mess, as I have still been organizing/cleaning.

.....and I sadly have a box in the basement of stuff I still need to sort.

Perhaps once I go through it all, I will also move into having it categorized and inventoried to help and I don't inadvertently buy something I already have.

I have an old-ish (C2D) Intel system in my closet with IDE and floppy support, just in case. I do occasionally find a 3.5" diskette at work that I need to read data off of, but that's getting more and more rare these days.

I had a blueray drive for a while but the sata data cable broke off of it so I'm back to a optical drive pulled out of some dell.

 

I keep around quite a few old core 2 duo/quad machines for random projects

I have (and where I have it):

 

1 3.5" floppy drive, in a Pentium 3

1 5.25" floppy drive, in a Pentium 3

1 DVD-ROM, region-unlocked, in a Pentium 3

1 CD-ROM in a Pentium 120

1 CD-Recorder in a Pentium 120

1 3.5" floppy in that Pentium 120

And I have a PCI Firewire card not in a machine right now for using with my old Sony firewire cameras, unfortunately I discovered that all the CCD Sony cameras no longer work and only be used as tape players. The Camera's show nothing.

 

My current PC has a BD-ROM and a BD-RW, however I've not written a BD disc at all in the time I've had it.

 

Most of the stuff post PCI is standard enough that you can still use it on machines up to the C2D. My Z87 board has a PCI slot, but using it causes the power management to dis-engage, so the Firewire card got swapped out with a HDMI capture card instead. If I want to capture anything from the firewire cameras I'll have to use the MacMini's.
