Black screen + fan speed 100% RTX 2060S

Hello,

I'm having crashes with my config, just as the title says. This occurs when playing, often when I do a ALT TAB then go back to the game, or when I just loaded in a new zone.

I have a RTX 2060 super which isn't overheating (72°C under load I think)
An i7 5820k which WAS OC to 4.5Ghz, but I did a clear CMOS because of this matter
MB is an MSI X99A raider
And the PSU is a seasonic focus gold plus 750w something like this, it's pretty new and shouldn't be the problem

+ the usual

So I've searched around the internet and found some people having the same problem, they are being told it could be :

- The PSU, but mine is pretty new, high quality and has more than enough power

- A PSU cable not well connected, I unplugged it, replugged it on both sides and I even used another one

- The GPU, could be a defective GPU but it has been working fine since last august and just started crashing recently ...
- Drivers but I did a rollback to the november ones and still get crashes

- Motherboard, mine is old and X99 isn't known for it's reliability... what do you think ?
- Windows 10 updates .... I don't really know how to roll back updates and which ones should I remove, also windows update doesn't seem to like when I uninstall updates ... I uninstalled one then rebooted the computer just to see it installed again '-'

I can run a OCCT "PSU" test without problems apparently so that's why I think it could be software but I don't really know ....

Do you have any idea ?

Thanks in advance

*** SOLUTION FOUND ***

I'm going round the threads associated with this to give the information that I've been collecting over the last 3 weeks whilst experiencing the same exact problem.

I started with an EVGA RTX 2080 Ti Black Edition which then artifacted (faulty GDDR6 Ram Modules from Micron), and then replaced with the exact same card, except this time it failed with a black screen and 100% fan usage.

Thinking its the GPU again, I got a replacement RTX 2080 Ti except this time it was the MSI RTX 2080 Ti Ventus GP OC (factory overclocked version of the gp basically).

Immediately presented with the same problem.

Sometimes I can't even post, sometimes I can get to login screen on windows and it then crashes the second I try to type my pin in, sometimes It loads but with windows default drivers then crashes when NVIDIA's drivers are loaded, and finally sometimes it crashes when loading up ANY game.

The common problem here is NOT the graphics card in my case.

It was the POWER DELIVERY.

I traced the cables to the PSU and noticed the 8 pin connector wasn't fully snapped into the Corsair 550W Bronze semi modular PSU.

After pushing this all the way in, it clicked and everything went back to normal and started working.

A few things to note here - the machine was a prebuilt but was brand new, as well as all the GPU's used.

Whenever the GPU ramped up in power usage, it cut off and got a black screen, with 100% fan usage that can't be fixed unless you reboot via power button holding or flicking the psu switch.

IF this is not your problem, and you have even tried swapping out your PSU then your GPU is actually to blame here.

As others have posted, either get a new GPU which comes repasted, or repaste the GPU yourself.

For me, multiple new GPUs did not fix this problem.

The OP here states he's tried everything, however I've seen people saying that despite the GPU wasn't overheating, re-pasting fixed the problem? Maybe give that a try?

Good luck all!

Came here because I had the same problem. Since my power cables were plugged in correctly and I've changed my thermal paste. What did it for me was G-sync. My monitor is a G-Sync enabled monitor. Disabled that in the nvidia control panel and haven't had an issue since!
