There were 3,019 recognized emojis at the time of the bill's introduction. "I guess it's an OK idea. I wouldn't say it's good. I wouldn't say it's bad. It's not hurting anybody," said Pam Buck, of Weathersfield. If the bill is passed, Vermont would become the first state to enact emoji-plate legislation, but not the first in the world. Legislators in Queensland, Australia, passed legislation allowing the emoticons to appear on state-registered plates in 2019. Drivers there are able to select from the laughing, smiling, wink, "love" or sunglasses emojis. Those plates are setting back Australian drivers approximately $336 each, however, Vermont's bill does not add a price for the proposed vanity plates.

 

My Thoughts:
Oh god, this is going to be another NULL, NO PLATE, NO TAG/NO TAGS, XXXXXXX, or NV situation all over again but for an entire state of vanity plate owners. This is sure to cause all sorts of weird issues with backend systems, OCR, and waste hundreds of man-hours attempting to get legacy ascii systems to recognize unicode emojis. On one hand, I fear for the developers involved, but on the other hand.... DO IT VERMONT, show these developers why you can't trust any input data at all!

Could be particularly bad for hit & run type situations. Speaking for myself, a string of emojis is a lot harder to remember than text.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it. :P

Vermont is also where people register their gray import vehicles (like R34s, JZX100s, S15s etc).

There seems to be a misinterpretation here.  It’s not instead of numbers, it’s one emoji in addition to the regular numbers.  So an emoji instead to say, the state flower, or whatever the normal additional cost license plate options are.

 

trying to track down what happened it seems the quote source and the image source are different.  The image source has a description of the law which is even more explicit that the emoji will not be part of the license code, but it has the pic where the emojis replace the license code, whereas the copy source is less explicit but does not have the picture.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I sure hope so, I haven't been able to find the full version of the bill but I fear it'll allow for situations like two different drivers having:

123?ABC
and

123❤️ABC

I read somewhere Windows added support for naming servers with emoji's as well. Thank you but no!!! (mostly used in dev environments to my knowledge rather than live)

It's like the guy who had the license plate NULL so it wouldn't ever return a result in the database. He had 26 unpaid speeding tickets when they finally got him

This is such a stupid idea.  Let's stick with letters and numbers please.  Imagine an officer having to write down the license plate.  Or devs of various softwares having to re-write code.  Etc.  Why fix what ain't broke?

Everyone doesn’t read sometimes though.  There are people thinking “oh I’m clever because I noticed the problem here” sure. This time.  Next time you might not be so lucky or I might not be so lucky.  There is no freedom from believing the BS.  There is only attempt at reduction.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
