Will gddr6 graphics cards work in a Gddr5 slot?

Soupbowl

Hello, I have a gddr5 motherboard, but I was looking at the XFX RX 5500 XT 8GB and was wondering if it would even work in my motherboard?

YES. U just need to have a PCI-E slot - the DDR version does not matter, the PCI-E version does not matter. If the motherboard has a PCI-E x16 slot, it’ll be compatible with virtually every GPU in the market right now.

What is a GDDR5 motherboard? That doesn't exist.

Anyways, if you mean you have a board that takes DDR4 or DDR3 memory, that will still work with a videocard that uses a different memory type. The videocard works independently of system memory, so there is no issues there.

As far as graphics cards go, all that matters is the board has the matching slot for the connector, so PCIe slot for PCIe card, AGP slot for AGP card etc. Any other component do not matter. You can put a RX 5700 XT with its GDDR6 and PCIe 4.0 onto a Sandy Bridge system which uses DDR3 and PCIe 2.0, and they will still work because both are PCIe

Which motherboard do you have?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Do you have a PlayStation 4? There are no PC motherboards that use GDDR5 as system RAM.

This is like asking if you can park an electric car in a gas powered car's parking spot.

The only thing that matters for the GPU on the MB is the PCIe version, and since they are backwards compatible, the worst you can ever do is plug a PCIe3 card into a PCIe4 slot and have it operate at PCIe3 speeds.

The card will work on any board as long it has a pcie x16 slot. Pcie came out over 10 years ago and old board from 10 years ago with a pcie x16, the 5500xt, will work with those boards too.
