(Update: F2 announcement) Beating yourself at price - Pocophone X2 + F2 found

williamcll

Update: F2 pro has been annouced for 499 EUR for base 128GB model, technically the cheapest 5G phone in the global market (or second cheapest if you count the Vivo IQOO 3 which is much harder to find since it's mostly Asia exclusive)

Previous news regarding the earlier X2 model below:

Spoiler

Performance wise it seems to sit between the Snapdragon 845 and the 730G, hinting it probably won't be using the 865, perhaps the 730G or 765G?

Xiaomi sub-brand POCO isn’t done yet. The brand reportedly has been in the news for working on a new smartphone that will succeed the POCO F1 smartphone from 2018. POCO’s global head late last month teased the brand isn’t done yet. Now, an unannounced smartphone by the name POCO X2 has surfaced on Geekbench. The benchmarking platform reveals the upcoming POCO phone will run Android 10 OS to take care of its software side of things. The POCO X2 is said to have 1.80GHz octa-core chipset codenamed as “phoenixin,” paired with 8GB of RAM under the hood. While the chipset details are unknown at the moment, we can tell it helps the phone score 547 points in the single-core test and 1,767 points in the multi-core test.

Since it’s the very first time the POCO X2 is hitting headlines, that’s all we know so far. Interestingly, the POCO X2 Geekbench scores are similar to the Redmi K30’s, which was launched in China last month. Will it be a rebranded version Redmi K30 smartphone? We’ll have to wait and watch.

Additionally, mentions of a F2 model is also apparent.

According to the documents, Xiaomi has filed a trademark for a phone named POCO F2 - a clear indication that the successor is coming. And a trademark was presented right before the launch of the original POCO, so the announcement is probably nearing.

Image

Of course, the global name of the phone will probably be Pocophone F2 except for India, where it's going to be called POCO F2, judging by the previous release. It looks like the Redmi K20 Pro isn't the spiritual successor of the Pocophone F1 as the latter would be getting a proper heritor.

Thoughts: Unless they can push the price of a mid-range phone even cheaper, nothing on the specs really stands out. The F2 better be a flagship or else nobody is going to buy it.

Yeah, Xiaomi's Mi9T Pro is ~350$, has a Snapdragon 855, 1080p OLED screen, 128GB storage, 6GB Ram.

The F1 had a launch price of 300$, and if the X2/F2 launches around that price, without an OLED screen, it will get cannibilized by the Mi9T Pro.

However if it comes with OLED, it might be a viable alternative to the Mi9T non-pro.

Apparently we will NOT see the Poco F2 at tomorrow's launch:

More confirmed X2 specs ~ basically a custom Redmi K30:

Update: Pocophone is now doing a countdown for their new product, named the F2 (pro), how similar to other XiaoMi products is not known.

Some rumors also say that the F2 will be using the last generation 855+ which is slightly slower than the 865

I will be happy if it costs between $400-$600 at launch, matches the OnePlus 7T/7T Pro in performance, sports a 90hz+ OLED screen, and includes a 4000mAh+ battery.

Cuz then the pricing will be perfect at $123 for an F1 and $456 for an F2. Even better if the "F2 Pro" is released at $789. B|

Much slower than the 865, but still plenty fast, and much cheaper than the 865 too.

For the CPU and GPU, the 865 is about 25% faster than the 855+, but with more or less then same efficiency (so the 855 uses less power, but is slower).

For the Pocophone, getting the price right is much more important than being the fastest device on the market.

Efficiency of sd 855 should not be better than sd 865.. Even massively depends on the software optimization on a low profile device..

I said efficiency of the 855 is about the same, which it is. The amount of energy used to complete a given calculation is roughly the same for the 855 and 865. The 865 completes the task quicker though.

Here are the measurements from Anandtech's tests.

The interesting ones are the red and orange bars on the left side.

I saw the pre performance measurement long ago.. Sd 865 was obviously looking better in there

Not sure if this deserves its own thread but I don't feel like making one...

The POCO F2 Pro has officially been announced!

  • SoC: Snapdragon 865
  • DRAM: 6GB (LPDDR4X) or 8GB (LPDDR5) depending on storage.
  • Storage: 128GB or 256GB, UFS3.1
  • Display: 6.67" AMOLED (60Hz refresh, 180Hz sampling rate) at 2400x1080 resolution.
  • Size: 163.3 x 75.4 x 8.9mm
  • Weight: 218 grams
  • Battery: 4700mAh, with 30 watt charging (no wireless charging)
  • USB 2.0 Type-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, fingerprint reader and IR blaster.
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1
  • 5G support
  • NO water resistance.

Cameras:

  • Main: 64MP (IMX686), 1/72" sensor (0.8 micron size with 2x2 binning for effective 1.6 microns) - f/1.89, 26mm equivalent lens.
  • Wide: 13MP (1.12 micron pixel size) - f/2.4, 123° FoV
  • Telephoto: 5MP (1.12 micron pixel size) - f/2.2, 50mm equivalent lens. Notable feature: It can focus at just 2cm distance, which means it works as a macro camera as well.
  • Depth: 2MP (no additional info available but who cares?)
  • Front camera: 20MP 1/3.4" (0.8 micron pixel size). Mechanical pop-up (so no notch or cutout).

Price: 499 or 599 USD/Euro for the 128GB and 256GB model respectively.

Other notable stuff:

According to POCO, they have upgraded the cooling solution a lot.

The screen can produce up to 800 nits of brightness.

The phone can record at 8K.

It seems like the cameras does not have OIS. That might be a big drawback. But some sites say it has OIS, but POCO hasn't mentioned it. So it's up in the air right now.

Love.. You follow Anand so much :)

Yeah by 2X2 pixel binning the image output will be 16 MP.. Remember you gave me a 12 megapixel sample 🙄
