The main reason I switched was because I wanted to downsize my build (you probably recall that conversation) as I already had the 3600 in my X370 board. But then after all it turns out that I found a way to fit my full ATX case into my media center setup anyway without it being too obtrusive so I'm just going to call this a failed experiment and sell my mATX case. The mobo support for that case was going to be way too limited going forward.

Maxed out = Overclocked as much as possible without degrading it quickly (unless otherwise specified) Every CPU has a max it can do before the current and voltage itself is high enough to breakdown the silicon rapidly.

So is that the max current the socket on those boards can handle, or is that what it's set to for testing?

Yeah, but that's the part that confuses me. A big cooler in a well ventilated case seems like it would be plenty of airflow, so why is it listed as little ambient airflow?

it's the max current the VRM can handle. You wont blow up the socket but the mosfets could (or just run so hot that capacitors nearby degrade quickly)

 

Big air coolers blow air through their heatsink, airflow below them is limited. Downdrafts are what blows a ton of air to the VRM.

Gotcha, This all makes so much more sense, thank you!

Just to make sure I understand, I'm planning on using a 3600 or 3600X in a mATX case. I have never overclocked before, and was only planning on dipping my toes in the water this time. A Tier E board would be fine for this right? Or should I expect to get a Tier D.

Tier E will do if that's as good of a CPU you'll ever use on it

Hi all, I am just upgrading my PC.

Current:

i5-4690k

Asus X97 Pro Gamer

16gb DDR

 

Upgrade:

R7 3800x

16gb DDR4 2400 (yeah, yeah I know it is slow, but I am not paying for it so will suffice for now)

 

But I am uncertain by motherboard, ideally I believe I should wait a month of so for B550 boards...but I'll be honest, I have the CPU already and I am impatient...

Thus to future proof I believe best to go with X570 so in future I can upgrade the CPU to newer ones.

So I already know I probably won't maximise the usage of X570 but is the only current future proofing option today.

 

Question I need help with...what board should I go for?

 

From the above it seems something in Tier C - would this be about right?

It will be cooled (when I can source a AM4 bracket set) by a Cryorig A80.

 

So far I've found the Gigabyte X570 Gaming-X or UD for £170

AMD

 

All current draw figures are based on Prime95 small FFT with AVX unless otherwise specified, in other words the worst case scenario. Only often recommended sku of CPUs in the same generation and core/thread count configuration is named, others share the same rating. Hey can anyone explain what the list means when it says something like 'maxed out 3700x'? Does it mean overclocked? Barely manages to hit max stock frequencies? I'm unclear on what it's trying to say.

Of course means overclock (including stuff like memory and infinity fabric). Stock clocks are never maxed out even if we say "3rd gen comes maxed out from the box", as this statement only applies to core clock.

Hey there, I'm building a single GPU PC based on R5 2600, and I'm not going to overclock. I'm asking here for an ambiguity that I might be seeing because of my lack of knowledge so here it is: can I pick the Micro ATX version of any mobo (unless form factor is specified ofc)? Is there a huge discrepancy in VRM quality between the same model over different form factors (unless explicitly stated)? Can I, let's say, pick the Micro version of the Asrock B450 Pro4 without second thoughts? Is there any due consideration about GPUs in picking a Micro ATX over a Standard ATX (keeping in mind I would definitely go with a mid tier model <200€)?

Among cheap boards there's usually no difference, higher end ones (e.g. B450 Tomahawk vs B450M Mortar) you may see some ports missing on the mATX board.

Yeah I know, that's why I switched it up! It is a ex-display item from a local store but they keep their display items in glass displays so not been messed with. Plus full warranty with it still too. Coming tomorrow as they are not allowed to do collections!
