Overheating 3700x in new open loop?!

Go to solution Solved by nick name,

Perhaps your friend didn't give you the proper mounting hardware for the block?  Have you tried other screws yet?

Hi lads,

so after 5 days of working on my very first open loop (and went straight to hard line) I ran into this issue:

A goddamn 3700x on stock is idleing around 60C, during 100% load (CB15) it almost instantly gets into low 80s.

The loop consists of 360+240 rads, EK-XRES 100 SPC pump/res and a EK Supremacy WB. I bought the AM4 plate so I can install the block, but kept the screws that are used for Intel systems, but they screw in without a problem)

I suspect it might either be insufficient contact between WB and CPU or possibly some gunk stick between WB´s microfins. During dissambly I inspected the WB for corrosion and cleaned any gunk possibly stuck in there. Water flow is OK, no issues there.

Any help appreciated!

(Post scriptum: Added photos of the build)

I'll ask the stupid questions first (please don't be offended):

- is there protective plastic still on the cold plate

- is the cooler mounted with enough pressure

- what are you measuring temps with

- Lol no. I bought it second hand from a friend of mine who does custom loops "professionally" (flushed loop with over 20l of water)
- Yep, tightened them as much as possible, right now trying different AM4 screws from a different cooler, but I doubt they will work

- HWInfo, also tried BIOS. Both reporting idle temps around 50-60

I wanna say that higher idle temps like that probably indicate poor contact.  You using anything weird instead of thermal paste?

Came with just standard Intel screws. The tips are a bit smaller than "normal" am4 screws, but they fit.
I could try different AM4 screws for a different air cooler, but they are smaller in lenght, so I hope I dont crack the cpu/board when tightening them.

So, replaced the screws, tightened them real hard and now Im idling around 35C, after 15m of Prime I got to 60C.
If I can say so, the issue has been solved, so its time to close this thread.

So our suspicions were correct then.  Glad you got it sorted.
