Hello, how far away is usable cloud gaming service in your opinion ? I am not sure about buying new high end gaming rig (2080ti / 9900K) as cloud gaming is definitely replace it once and in my opinion its not that distant. Otherwise i am playing with idea of buying ps4/ps5 in the meantime as cheaper option ( if i would get used to controller) instead PC. Thank you

Cloud gaming is shit to eh to okay depending on the service, what internet you have, how far away from their servers you are, and if the internet gods decide to be kind to you. A PC hooked up to a monitor consistently performs within margin of error to any other PC at the same spec hooked up to a monitor as well.

You can build PCs much cheaper than a 9900K/2080 Ti combo, but yes if you're not in a hurry then wait for the Xbox X thingie or the PS5, or go for an Xbone X/PS4 Pro now. They're excellent gaming machines if you don't mind the framerate and don't need modding support.

I think it mainly depends on how good your internet service is where you are playing. I am in Sacramento, CA using Comcast…I tried Shadow with gives you a Windows 10 VM in the cloud and had virtually zero problems playing my Steam games. It would, occasionally, stutter but it was only very brief (1-2 seconds) and happen at most once every couple of hours, maybe less (so once a gaming session). And I was using wifi which the service didn't recommend.

Unfortunately I don't ever see getting reasonably priced, fast, data-cap free internet across the country. Because of this, cloud gaming will always be a niche market. It just won't work well for a lot of people.

I am going to be the dissenting voice here: if you live in a country with good, reasonably-priced Internet-connections without datacaps1, like e.g. Finland, cloud-gaming is already a reasonable option. I have tried PS Now, NVIDIA's Geforce Now or whatever they call it now and Steam's Remote Play2 over the Internet and they all work fine in my experience. I can't say how well they'd work for competitive gaming as I don't play such titles, but for the less twitchy-finger kinds of games that I enjoy, I don't have all that much to complain about.

There are a couple of drawbacks and caveats: you get lower image-quality than you'd get locally and possibly lower audio-quality -- I have potatoes for ears, I can't hear any difference -- and your network has to be configured properly for best results. Oh, and unless you're using Steam's Remote Play, you're not getting modding-support or such.

1) I pay about 40€/month for 250/50 Internet-connection with no datacaps, perfectly stable, and I get the speeds I am paying for regardless of the time of day. This has always been my experience despite me having lived all over Finland over the years.

2) Whether you define Steam Remote Play as 'cloud-gaming', I personally do define it as such. I make use of it every time my hubby and I travel to the other side of Finland to visit relatives and I am extremely glad that the option exists.

If your in the US, probably never going to happen. If your in a country with some fucking sense, then maybe a few more years.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
