Ethernet will always provide a better experience. There are many variables when it comes to WiFi. But in an ideal setting they should be basically the same

If you have bad WiFi, you won't get a good connection, while ethernet will just always works (unless you're using a broken or insufficient cable).

WiFi speeds on 5Ghz are comparable to gigabit LAN nowadays, but only in the right circumstances.

 

If possible I will always recommend just running a wired connection.

Like they already said, ethernet is always the way to go.

 

How the wifi performs depends on what wireless card they use on the board. Some built in one are super shit

The same limitations that you'd have with any wireless connection. Potential instability, weak points in coverage, and interference from outside sources. Being native to the board, unless it's a terrible controller, or an add-in card generally isn't going to make a significant difference positive or negative; if one has issue, it's likely that the other will as well.

Wi-Fi quality depends on a couple of things:

  • How many users are on the network
  • The quality of the signal by the time it gets to your PC (and possibly vice versa)

For gaming, I haven't really noticed an issue with using Wi-Fi over Ethernet, especially on 802.11ac. It was an issue when I added a NAS to my network and servicing it solely through Wi-Fi was a hassle. Otherwise under most conditions I've encountered, it really doesn't matter and isn't noticeable on a practical level.

 

But your millage may vary. I was in an apartment.

Ethernet is always as lag free as your router is not crappy, or your ISP is not crappy.  It's old school and just works.

Wifi allows you to share the router with someone else and not need to be in the same room with them, or have a 50 foot CAT 5 cable that your dog will chew on when you go to the store, and it can save you if the port breaks.  In general, you just want to use ethernet when you can.

If you are considering it in regards to gaming, from someone who plays MMOs and some looter shooters like Destiny, wifi has never been a problem for me.

 

My router is upstairs and my PC's are all around the house. My main PC has integrated wifi on the motherboard and I have no problems.

 

Steaming video is never an issue.

 

It varies from person to person, though.

 

Not necessarily the same experience you get.
