What is your record in holding on for a pc update?

Im on a 10 year streak with a q6600 with 7gb ddr2 ram due one busted slot on the mobo, Im going to buy a 3900x and 2080 super hopefully it feels like time traveling.

I was wondering if no one here has beaten this record.

10,000 bce, my dad got me a 1/1000 bit rock, and my monitor was a sanded piece of oak wood.

now i have a 2060 super and 9600k, but now im the rock

Indirectly, that would be a system I use at work that still runs XP from ~2006, making it ~13 years.

Directly, that would be my current system still running a 4790k, assuming that I don't count the consumer prebuilts that my family had growing up, which I didn't keep track of.

Seems a little strange to move the goalposts to hold onto a dubious honor, no?

2007-2017

Dell pre-built, which I installed 500MB RAM making it whopping 1GB total and also installed a Saphire X1950GT (passively cooled) into it.

Never did any other updates, I

sold it 2017.

So I guess we're equal? :)

Well it's not really goalpost moving,  it's kinda implied it must be *your* PC and not some random PC you know of...

That said I also have a Fujitsu Ergo Pro "X" from ca. 1997 which still works and which never saw an update in its life,  not even drivers,  does that count?

My daily driver laptop is getting a bit old but working fine. I used a different Dell laptop for a long time as well with a Centrino something or other that was a solid machine.

Service Tag
6YRR2N1
Ship Date
14 FEB 2011
Country
United States
I upgraded this one to an i5 580M and 8GB of RAM with a 500GB SSD and a larger capacity battery, but the rest is all original. The screen kind of sucks.

Got me beat out.  I recently found my q6660 machine in my basement covered in dust.  And I’m thinking I may have to ditch my 4770k system soon.  Not yet.  Not till after the Xbox is taken apart by reviewers and we find out what is actually in it to be sure there’s no hope at the very least but I’ve been seeing it’s mortality for a few months now.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Gonna update to the new Mac Pro?  Although it's definitely a pricier (if also higher-end) machine...

Over the weekend I built my first PC.  My old PC (a Dell with an i7-920) was over 10 years old (summer 2009).

All I had changed was replacing the power supply.

Lets just say my new PC (Ryzen 5 3600, SSD) is a tad faster.

lol no. If I was going to drop that kind of cash on a PC I would build my own, plus a 2009 Mac Pro that just about keeps up with my brand new laptop is plenty fast enough for me. As soon as some 6 cores Xeons come up cheap on ebay, I'll upgrade it to 12 cores from 8

Okay so I'm not counting ALL upgrades (for example new video card, adding hard drive, etc), I'm only counting major platform updates, like new motherboard & CPU socket.  (Also upgrading the CPU in the same motherboard, and moving the same motherboard to a new case, doesn't count either for me.)

For me, I think(?) my current record is 6 years 11 months - from February 2008 to January 2015.  However, I'm not entirely sure that's 100% accurate, because....

  • Feb 2008 - built my 1st system with Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 2GB DDR2, Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H, OCZ StealthXStream 500W, Xion XON-303, Win XP, reused 80GB, 250GB & 750GB HDDs, etc.  I later upgraded to 4GB RAM and added a few more larger hard drives as storage needs grew.
  • (Aug 2008 - dad bought Dell D830 laptop with Core 2 Duo T7250, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, Win XP, etc.  He later upgraded to 500GB HDD, then finally to 500GB SSD.)
  • ~ Mar/Apr 2012 - Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H motherboard died.  Didn't have the money to get a new board (or new CPU, RAM, etc), so I used my dad's laptop for a while.
  • Jan 2015 - built my 2nd system with i7-4790K, 32GB DDR3, ASRock Z97 Extreme6, 256GB SATA SSD, Corsair AX760, Rosewill Thor V2, 3x 4TB HDDs, Windows 7 Pro (going to 10 Pro as soon as it was out of beta), plus a few other HDDs I had laying around.  Have since added more hard drives, an EVGA GTX 1060 3GB SC, and moved to a Fractal Design Define R5 case.
  • Dec 2015 - got a Clevo P750DM-G barebones laptop with GTX 970M 6GB, put in an i3-6100, 2TB HDD, 8GB DDR4 & Linux, then soon added a 250GB SATA SSD & Windows 10 Pro.  Later upgraded to i7-6700K, added 32GB RAM bringing it to 40GB (then later maxed out the 64GB), replaced HDD with a 1TB SATA SSD then another, added a third 1TB NVMe SSD.

For the last couple years or so, my Clevo laptop has basically been my daily driver.  I still have the 4790K, it's mostly powered off except when I'm shuffling stuff around on the many hard drives I now have.

I think my dad has me beat on how long he held onto a PC.  He kept using that Dell D830 with the Core 2 Duo until around March (I think) 2018, then upgraded to a newer Dell Inspiron 17" with i5-8565U, 16GB RAM, 250GB SSD + 2TB HDD (pulled it out and put his 500GB SSD in so he'd have his data), etc.

As for biggest performance difference between upgrades ... I'd have to nominate my dad again.  It wasn't as long as a time frame between upgrades, but technology was progressing a lot faster then.

  • Jan 1989 - bought system with 286-10, 1MB RAM, 40MB HDD, EGA graphics, etc.  Total system was about $1800, case+mobo+RAM+cpu+PSU+keyboard was $940.  I'm guessing the CPU by itself would have been around $279 or so, based on prices I looked up for 287-10 FPU chips from online magazine archives from late 1988.  (PC Mag 12-27-1988 had 287-10 listings from $239 to $329.25, but most hovered around $279 give or take.)
    • Wiki's Instructions per Second page rates the 286 at 1.28 MIPS at 12 MHz -- so I'd guess (extrapolating/math) the 10 MHz would have been 1.067 MIPS.
  • Oct 1995 - bought AMD 486DX4-120 CPU for $102.
    • That same Wiki page rates the DX4 at 70 MIPS at 100 MHz --  extrapolating to 120 MHz gets it to 84 MIPS.

So... we're looking at a (84 / 1.0667 = )  78.75 TIMES performance increase,

combined with a (279 / 102 ~ ) 2.735 times reduction in price (or, a price cut to ~ 36.55%)

Yields ... a 215.4 TIMES increase in price-to-performance, in 6 years 9 months, or 81 months.

Although ... that doesn't take into account newer software being much more demanding, negating much of the performance increase, among other issues.

I'm tentatively planning to replace my i7-4790K with an AMD build around Black Friday 2021, depending on DDR5, AM5, PCIe 5, performance boost, budget and other factors.  That would be pretty close to the same time interval as my dad's upgrade from the 286 to the 486.  I would *strongly* prefer a 215 times (not percent!) increase in price-to-performance when I upgrade.

Thanks, AMD, for lighting a fire under Intel's DKtb8m_UEAA-wws.jpg.b1f98f13d32ddfbdf91d942414b41cdb.jpg.  I'd gotten the blues from seeing the stagnation of a certain CPU maker the "better?" part of the last decade or so.  For example, if you were to count 81 months forward from December 2010 (a month before Sandy Bridge) to September 2017 (a month before Coffee Lake), would a $100 Intel CPU in 2017 have been 79 times faster than a $280 Intel CPU in 2010/2011?  No?  I didn't think so either.  (Maybe we should go 80 months - Jan 2011 Sandy Bridge to Sept 2017 a month before Coffee Lake, then make the comparison.)

Come to think of it though ... I thought I had heard a year or two ago of someone upgrading from an ancient 386 straight to like a Ryzen 1st or 2nd gen CPU, but I can't find where that might have been posted.  If that actually happened, though, I think they'd have us all beat. :)

Fair enough!  I love the thought of having a new Mac Pro, but it'd be tough to justify unless I either needed it for work (I really don't) or was so wealthy that I wouldn't mind dropping $6K-plus on a personal machine.

I ran an i7 4930k, 16 GBs of RAM 1600 MHz, and an EVGA X79 Dark for the past 6 years. I finally upgraded to a 3700X, 32 GBs of RAM 3600 MHz, and a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite. That's the longest I've gone without an upgrade to my main system, but to be fair I probably went through three different video cards.
