This will allow players to install (or remove) only certain parts of a game. So instead of installing the full game, you could choose to just install the single-player mode and then do multiplayer later - or vice versa.

Wow... unironically that is the ugliest console I have seen in decades. It looks like a cheap chinese audio interface. Please tell me thats far from what it will actually will look like. like some kinda pre-pre-pre concept art fan render of what they think it will look like.

Edit- Thank god. Viewing the actual patent release (https://nl.letsgodigital.org/uploads/2019/08/sony-interactive-entertainment.pdf) this is the Dev kit confirmed. Would be nice to put that in the headlines and articles, instead of just saying its the ps5's "new sleek design" Lets just hope now that the console release looks nothing like this.

That's a dev-console, not the final console. Look at the following picture, can you guess what it is?

That's a PS3 dev-kit. Just goes to show how stupid it is to jump to the conclusion and then rage about it on the Internet that the dev-kit looks stupid, therefore the final release will do too.

The Dev Kit looks like a V, so for 5. But it's also been pointed out that it's designed to stack vertically and still have air flow. A common setup in early development deployments. The final one won't look like the Dev Kit we've seen.

Even though it is the dev kit, personally i like the way it looks more than any other playstation to date, but i can see why others like you find it ugly, so to each their own.

Looking at it, if they inverted the console so the V was on the bottom and went with a superfine 50%-60% open mesh for the intake along with a blue LED breathing setup it wouldn't look bad. Ignoring the dev kit stuff on the face of course.

Why would they make a dev kit look like a coccyx cushion... The PS3 dev kit made sense, it was basically a rectangle box.

That was my thinking as well.

 

Clearly dev kits usually put function over form (basically a box containing the hardware), why bother trying to design something like that?

 

For me the biggest selling point is the PS4 backwards compatibility. You can expect Sony-controlled exclusives to be PS5-only but I think many 3rd party developers will go with simultaneous PS4 and PS5 releases.

There has been a lot of talk of Sony trying to implement PS1, PS2 and PS3 backwards-compatibility as well, but nothing has really been confirmed yet, so who knows? Though, personally, I don't put a lot of faith in those rumours, since it'd eat a lot of the point with PS Now; wouldn't make much sense for Sony to cannibalize their own services like that.

Putting the primary intake on the bottom seems like on overheating disaster. Even if the mesh was fine enough to act as a dust filter, console players aren't used to cleaning out their systems the same was PC players are. 

 

I'm really curious to see how thermals hold up in general on the new consoles. I'm sure that they'll down clock the shit out of the components to keep power draw in check, but with desktop class components there's only so low that they can go if they are promising native 4K or 120fps (at least on SeXbox).

Eh, the gap looks to be 1.5-2 inches of vertical space which is enough space for airflow. It also wouldn't be difficult to include temp sensor readings in the OS and have it recommend attempting to clean the filter if temps are getting too high at too low a performance output.

Most of people who buy consoles, don't want to clean them so I think that would be a bad idea

Dev kit is meant to be functional, not be pretty. It's to make games, not to play them as end user...

Disconnecting the power cord and wiping the grill down with a damp cloth once every 6 months is not exactly difficult levels of maintainence.

I like that it has a display,  that then wouldn't be used to show the real goods like temps,  frequencies and fps,  but instead for gaming related "gimmicks" almost no dev would ever use (theoretically speaking of course!)
