Block people from replying to threads (OP-based)

Go to solution Solved by colonel_mortis,

I'm going to have to give this a hard no. If a member is actively disruptive to the flow of the forum, report them and explain your concerns, and a moderator will take a look. If the member continues to cause issues after that, either they aren't actually causing issues, or we are following our escalation policy and it will be sorted out after due process.

We are not moving this process into members' own hands.

I feel like this would be a great addition to blocking users.
For the longest time the (usually) same people post meaningless, topic-diverting comments that do pretty much nothing but make a mess of the thread.
I feel like blocking isn't enough, others can still see and reply to them instead of whatever you posted about and it's really not doing anything proactive.

So why couldn't we just, block people from replying to our threads ?
Just take [banned user] for example, he'd go around replying with the most worthless info possible on any subject and people would *basically* derail the thread to tell him he's wrong.

Well, if I just decided not to allow him to reply, that wouldn't happen.
Heck, it might save a lot of time for the mods not to have to deal with this kind of stuff.

Like, they could still read it, just not reply.

Nice try, Xi Jinping.

This is free speech forum, if you don't like how some people use that right then report them to moderators.

lol but nah.

I'm just tired of specific people replying to threads about something unrelated and want a way to stop that.

example :
I want a new gpu, this is my system :
[insert whatever]

Some jackass :
BuT wHy tHaT mOtHeBrOaRd ?

It's often the same people, and blocking won't do anything.

Like you think its not a big deal for someone not being able to reply, for other people it is a big deal if they can't reply.

If anyone can block anybody from replying then you can bet that many salty people will abuse this and then people that may be even able to reply with a good insight on the matter of the OP may not be able to because they are blocked.

Not to mention that this goes against a free speech, this is a forum and not a private Discord server. There are moderators for a reason. If you dislike some people just ignore them, don't reply to them, it is that easy.

Free speech doesn't apply here lol
Esp if the mods decide to yeet your account from existence, they just will.

If I don't want someone's reply on something, that's my choice.
I don't see why I would care how "big of a deal" it is for people who post meaningless content either.

If there's a good reason for that then why not ?

But letting people decide whether they allow someone to post here or not is a bad idea, regardless of whether is their own thread or not.
