Is it doable? Yes, you don't have to do it so shoddily, but as long as you leave them enough room to breath (wood is an insulator, it'll cook your drives if you make it tight) it's fine. 

 

Is it a good idea? No. You're just wasting time and effort, exposing your drives to all sorts of mishaps, vibration is probably going to be awful, and there's several better ways to handle storage. I wouldn't risk good HDDs, and running several old, small HDDs just isn't worth it (power, hassle, unreliability, noise).
