Hi guys, I'm after a really budget orientated motherboard, right now I'm looking at https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/mJGxFT/asus-prime-b450m-a-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-prime-b450m-a , any opinions on it? Every £ does count for this build.

Thank you for your time,

vK

It's not for me this build, but, I'll consider asking the person about this. It should be fine, but just because I'm curious -- what are the differences between these two boards?

the power delivery is a bit better, and max series has bigger bios chips, with guaranteed 3000 series support

i'd say totally worth 5 bucks more

It's still terrible tho so it worth mentioning that both these motherboards are good for nothing more than 6-core CPU.

A 6 physical core CPU isn't going to be a problem in this build, it's for very entry and casual gaming :)

Just to clarify, does that mean that despite it being a B450 board an'all, it will support a 3400g out of the box?

Correct. You'll still need to update UEFI to latest one but it will boot with Zen 2 CPU (or rather 3xxx series since 3xxx APUs are still Zen+) at least.

Ah I see, yeah that does seem like a little bit of a weight lift compared to going through the ordeal of AMD test CPUs haha

it's actually not too bad, sharing a similar vrm to most of the msi lineup, just with a worse heatsink... so 8 cores would technically work just fine on it

No, it shares VRM config only with -Pro-M2 which is no better, Mortar has the same controller and MOSFETS apparently but more phases. It's still okay for stock 8-cores with the airflow but not as good as a bit more expensive ASRock Pro 4.
