There will soon be a new ISP where I am and they require me to get a router of my own. Additionally my current ISP tells me that most of the Problems that I have with them atm are because of the router they send us a few years back.. so either way I will have to get a new router. I don't know all that much about routers and what makes a good one, but in the past I was told more than once that the problems I encountered were caused by the "Fritzbox" that I was provided by the ISP

I most likely will need VoIP, an answering machine, Wlan  and maybe some kind of mesh since one wLan isn't enough to reach every corner of the house.

If possible I would like to spend a maximum of 350-400$ and I wouldn't mind paying less.

Oh and something without gaming in the Title would make it easier to get it partly reimbursed form taxes

If you are up for some tinkering, get a router compatible with ddWRT or Tomato, and flash that onto the router, it opens up a *whole new world* of possibilities.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Don't really have a lot of time in the next few month  and not that much experience with routers. So that would be an option for another time.

Although maybe a tad advanced its fairly easy to install pfsense onto an old desktop and put a decent wifi card in it for wireless

What are the internet speeds for your new provider? I can make a couple recommendations. One would be a Nighthawk from Netgear.

 https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R7000.aspx

The router typically given by ISPs isn't meant to last and will almost never give you the best in the way of internet speeds for very long.

The Internet speed with the new provider will be 300 mbit down 40mbit up.

Maybe i missed it, but is there Voip to i can connect my landline with it, with the Nighthawk.

In any Case I would need a few alternatives, since my wife wants to be included in the decision and have a few options to pick from.

This would also be a project for another time, since the router needs to be in my wifes office atm and there isn't enough room for another pc. and rerouting cables would take quite a bit of time that I can't spare right now.

Oh, I see you cant put it next to the modem or is that in the office too? Anyway I don't have any experience with the nighthawk I have heard multiple suggestions from other people, but I think that a lot of netgears stuff has seems to be good

Is that a router or Gateway? Most ISPs provide a gateway which is a modem and router in one box. So you have to figure what what you have to figure out what you need to replace.

Routers generally dont have VoIP hookups. Ive seen VoIP setups where you connect a seperate box to your router via Ethernet. Ive also seen VoIP setups from the cable company that you connect your phone directly to the modem. So what kind of VoIP service do you have?

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Ok the "Fritzbox" is an all in on thing with Router, modem, VoIp box, answering machine,Wlan, 500mb NAS and 6 Lan ports.. they are pretty common here..

I guess some of the problems root from it being a bad mashup of tech.

Not common in to US. Espeically the ansrewing machine, as Voice mail pretty much killed that in the states.

The biggest issue is, most routers you will find out there are not going to have many of those features. ALSO if you trying to buy another gateway, you need one that works with the type of internet you use. Because the modem componet is not going to support every type of internet that exists. Mostly you have aDSL/VDSL modems, Cable modems (Docsis 3.0/3.1) and while Fiber doesnt have a modem per say, you genreally get a media converter/router or just a media converter in some cases, plus there are diffrent types of fiber.

So first figure out what your current ISP internet type is and the new ISP. That also matters for phone service. Because Comcast digital voice for instace is kinda like VoIP, and you phone plugs directly in to the modem/gateway. While I have seen VoIP service that plug in to the router OR you put a box betwen your router and modem that you plug the phone in to. So there are lots of ways that VoIP works as well.

Bascially what kinda of internet do you have? That will give us a better idea of what you need.

install an ONT but nothing more

That helps you narrow things down. About any router should work. BUT the VoIP stuff is something that is going to be hard to find. I mean my router does have VoIP settings, but I think its more for QoS. Its not like I have an RJ11 port on the router.

That being said, ASUS, Netgear are good brands to look at. Ubiquti if you want a bit more control. I peronsally have a Synology router and its been rock solid.
