Need a little advise please,Raid, photos ect.

I have looked and tried to find a good answer but have come up short. before money is spent i want to cover all bases..

My bosses wife is a data hoarder, in the sense shes a professional photographer and keeps all files in raw format in the event she needs to edit anything. i recently found out her storage woes. she has one 14TB nas thats been unreliable but at the same time totally full. and she has a over 10 external usb drives between 1 and 5 TB that are also full. i myself shuck WD drives for my own personal server and know thats a good route for large drives, but these people are completely clueless when it comes to technical stuff. so i am trying to help..

Shes paranoid about drive failures after an external failed. i was thinking about setting up her computer to run a RAID 1 setup with 4 12tb drives to give them a total of 24TB but with a redundancy backup. i keep hearing from people that this is a bad idea, but no where does it say why its a bad idea. her current computer is a dell XPS8900. from what i understand it has a basic software intel raid capabilities in it, but have not yet confirmed it. i am trying to think of the best way to go forward with this. While keeping it as basic user friendly as possible.  I think going internal might be the best bet. but at the same time multiple bay external enclosures might be another idea. only thing i cant find any with reliable reviews. every external enclosure has negatives regarding data loss. What would yall recommend?

with amazon prime you get unlimited photo storage, including some raw formats. this might be the cheapest and safest back-up option.
