Need Help with homelab server PSU

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

@Tithonius

That chassis is made for a lower wattage PSU with an 80mm exhaust.

But if you're looking for something higher wattage due to the dual CPUs, you're probably going to want to opt for a good SFX PSU with an SFX to ATX bracket.   While most higher wattage SFX PSUs have an 80~92mm fan mounted on the top/bottom as opposed to front/rear, the bracket will give you the extra space the PSU needs to allow air into the PSU.

Hey all, so recently I have been building a server to use for general tasks in the homelab, some VM's and such, but I have been having a couple issues with finding a good power supply that I am happy with. The chassis that I will be using is this one here by silverstone: https://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=763&area=en

despite it being 2u (which I would rather try to avoid building in as I have plenty op space in the rack) I like it alot. I got it for a really good deal from a shop here locally and am super happy with how all of my components fit in it. I think it will do an amazing job for me, but again the PSU situation. As you can see from the pictures of the chassis, the PSU that it says it supports is "any ATX psu", and i assume that means that any desktop PSU will fit, but the issue that I think im going to have is with airflow. all of the PSU units that I have found on the market are all the top fan design, and that would get choked by the fact that the case is only 2u tall. I would like to find a modern PSU that has all of the protections and modern stuff built in, but is the older, rear fan design.

I am open to all suggestions as to what to choose, and would love to have somthing in the 650 to 750 watt range. It needs to be able to support dual 8-pin EPS connectors as I will be placing a dual socket board into the system with dual E5 2630 V3 chips. I have a old Asus Z10PA-D8 board that I wanna use.

So all in all, i would love to know what you guys think i should do, and of course, i appreciate all the help ❤️

Collecting every single CPU in existence? Is it possible? I have no idea, but i'm sure gonna try! http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/341848-dont-throw-away-old-cpus-im-collecting/

ok @jonnyGURUthat makes sense, i hate to have to do that, but it might be my only option. I found the FSP Twins PSU, and although I do not really need redundancy i guess it wouldnt hurt to have, and it does solve the problem with the fan situation.

I wouldnt mind finding another case, but i really fell in love with it and even tho I have it here already I would be willing to go another route, i just cant find anything that is in that price range that I really like and that supports what i wanna put into it. Due to it being a fairly simple machine that isnt doing anything fancy (storage is already handled by a Unraid server in the rack) I have a hard time justifying a huge 4u or 3u chassis just for some game servers and a vm box. any suggesstions there?

are the FSP twin PSUs any good?

People buy SFX power supplies and put them in ATX cases all of the time.  They do it because the smaller form factor gives them more room to manage cables, etc.

That said, if you DO get an SFX power supply, make sure the cables are long enough.  SFX power supplies are made to go into SFX cases, which are smaller, and don't need such long cables.  But quality PSUs (like from Silverstone, Corsair, etc.) will often have aftermarket cables available that are longer than the stock cables.

What "Corsair"?  SF750?  Seems that Amazon is just out of stock.  Give them a couple days.  It's a current model and should be in constant Amazon inventory.

yeah the sf750 i dont mind the silverstone, and i assume that it will be fine. the warranty is good and its should do what i need it to, i am worried about the cables being long enough tho, so idk about that.

SilverStone and Cablemod both sell longer cable sets.

Check the cable lengths of the cables that come with the PSU and see if they are or are not long enough first.

yeah will do, can i ask you one more question @jonnyGURU? Do i need a redundant psu for my unraid server? its just me and friends that use it, but it does handle all of my file management here at the house and some stuff remotely for work, just curious if i should invest in one or if they are loud and not worth it for a home server.

I would just have a UPS.

If you can survive with a few hours/days of downtime on the off chance that you need to replace a faulty power supply, then no you do not need redundant power supplies. Redundant power supplies are only necessary where server downtime would mean loss of money.

A UPS will cover you for short periods of time during mains power outages, such as in the event of a black out or a tripped breaker. Will give you a short period of time to safely save work and shut down the system, for mains power to be restored, or the time it takes for a backup generator can kick in. Won't do anything if the power supply in the system fails.
