Unless the specific game is worth the small trade-off, it's typically better value to go R5 3600.  It's got twice the threads for multi-core work, and is practically on-par with single-core strength.  The big bonus of going AMD is the motherboard isn't a dead end while the Intel one certainly is.

Ryzen 5 3600 all day long. It's basically equivalent in performance to a 8700K because of its SMT implementation. Do not EVER get a processor that lacks hyperthreading, i7 or otherwise. There are already titles that stutter and show poor results with the current gen 6 threaded i5s, like Battlefield 5 64 player conquest, Read Dead Redemption 2, and a few others, and that list is only going to expand going forward as more and more people buy into higher core count processors and more and more games are programmed to take advantage of them. The 3600 will last far longer in this regard because of its 12 threads. Not to mention the fact that it has a way better upgrade path than any and all 9th generation Intel processors, due to them being confirmed to be on a dead socket and chipset at this point.

TLDR: Get the 3600. You'll be much happier now and further down the line.

The 3600 is a better value, and I agree don't get anything without HT/smt.

That said, the 3600 is still slower than the 8700k at gaming, but it's likely you will never be able to perceive it unless you have a very powerful GPU and only play 1080p high refresh.

1440p+ and a mid-range/upper mid-range gpu, you won't notice.

He'll you won't even notice on a second generation Ryzen.

*Some games are very cpu limited and don't care sas much about gpus, like many MMOs. If you are a straight up mmo only player, you may consider Intel.

a 330-350$ RX5700 partner card is same tier out of the box, and can have vbios flashed then with safe and mild overclock in Global Wattman reaches near 2070S performance, matches stock 5700XT performance.  If you like tinkering its way more fun, and a better value.  I'd only get a 2060S if streaming is big concern, both cards can do it but usually one finds less issues running with Nvidea, AMD needs to catch up in that regard.

If you are new to tinkering but still interested in learning i'd recommend this model, since it runs way cooler then reference 5700 and has duel bios and, so if you screw up and don't have intigrated graphics to easily fix it you aren't screwed. https://www.newegg.com/powercolor-radeon-rx-5700-xt-axrx-5700xt-8gbd6-3dhr-oc/p/N82E16814131756

5700xt is about 7% faster than the 2060 super. At equal prices, it's a no-brainer unless the specific game you play doesn't work well on AMD.
