Hello all,

My current project is to create a storage server. Initially i was looking for NAS with 10gbe connection, but i can't seem to find one that i can readily purchase or i need to add some accessory network card.

So, unless someone can suggest me a very good nas, i think making a storage server with hardware that i already own, might be a better choice.

I currently own two x99 motherboards (one TUF, one X99 deluxe), a 6800k, a 5960x, 8gb of ddr4, ram one of my leftover vidcards, a RS2BL040 intel/lsi raid controller, and 8 x 16tb seagate ironwolfs.

I have a case that cas accomodate the drives, so no issues there. And i have an old ssd for os, and might use and NVME drive for caching if that's neccessary.

I'll probably use the TUF mobo with the 6800k. However, i still need to aquire a 10gb nic for the storage server.

However, i'm obliged to take another raid controller, but i'm rusty on current hardware.

Could you guys help me with making the best of my current hardware. Taking into account that it's no issue to acquire a new raid controller.

What hardware and what software do i need (other than freenas)?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Best regards,

Nexus

Why not freenas? Freenas should work very well here.

Then go software raid with zfs and drop the raid card.

What 10gbe standard do you want to use? Id personally go 10gbe-lr, as fiber is better in basically all ways.

I think he meant that he's "gonna use freenas, so what other software do I need?", but that doesn't make much sense either.
