In the market for a new monitor

Hi!

I just recently upgraded my PC and finally saved up enough to upgrade my monitor as well. My budget is within 400$ and I have an RTX 2070 Super. I'm looking for G-Sync ('G-Sync Compatible' is good enough), 1440p, 1ms response time and 144hz refresh rate.

Currently I have narrowed it down to these two panels:

https://www.amazon.com/LG-27GL83A-B-Ultragear-Compatible-Monitor/dp/B07YGZL8XF/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lg+ultragear+monitor&qid=1575157259&sr=8-3 (Missed out on the sale, unfortunately!)

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-27-led-qhd-g-sync-monitor-black/5293502.p?skuId=5293502

I'm leaning towards the LG one as it has an IPS display and has a 1ms response time as well. Is there any reason to get choose Dell one other than the fact the that it might have a slightly faster response time and is slightly cheaper? (Neither of these are major concerns for me personally)

Any other recommendations are much appreciated as well!

I read here someone said advertised response times are so marketeered as to be meaningless.  You can’t trust them.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I see. With that it mind would I be better off just going for the LG? I guess it isn't the biggest concern for me anyways as I'm no 'hardcore' gamer.

Ok so heres the comparison of those 2.

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/lg-27gl83a-b-vs-dell-s2716dg/1627/555?usage=3623&threshold=0.1

Out of the 2 the LG is hands down the better.

$400 is right dead on that awkward figure where there are some rather good options above that. e.g $450-$650

Im not based in the US so its a PITA for me to price check so dont be surprised if some of these are way out range budget wise, im basing them of UK prices.

Still here are some option ,if they are to expensive in ur location then the LG 27GL83A you found is likely ur best bet.

Sticking to 1440p 144hz+

VA panel

IPS Panel

I believe the PG279Q and VG27AQ are both on sale between $400-$500, the other 2 im not sure.

Thanks for the reply! Could you recommend me some in the 450-650 price range? What are the benefits of those and would it be worth waiting until I can get those?

Normally those i linked above would be in that range, thanks to current sales a couple for sure are not.

The 32LGK850g-b however will likely still being closer to $650 + as its £550 display here in the UK. its the best VA panel monitor i've seen tested and reviewed.

The 2 IPS displays currently on sale would also normal be in that range and are the best IPS displays in regards to uniformity, they also happen to be relatively fast gaming displays also which is nice.

Beyond that u start looking at specialized monitors, different specs. Like Ultrawides and 240hz displays. They tend to have worse uniformity which sucks but for those that want an ultra wide or want 240hz, ~$450+ price point is where they sit. For example at 25" 1080p 240hz the HP Omen X25f is i 'think' around $600, thats the MSRP at least dont know what it for sale at currently in the US. Anyway thats a monitor specialized for competitive gaming. Between $400 and $800 is where the Ultrawides tend to sit.

Like i said the $400 point is a real awkward budget, nothing is really 'worth it' at that price point, at least that which has been reviewed. At $300 or below u can pritty much point to 1 1440p display atm, the rest are 1080p, but those displays are not ones u would recommend to som1 with $400 to spend.  1440p monitors dont really start appearing until $300+ and the ones worth mentioning dont start coming up until u hit around $500+, like those i listed.

Monitor reviews .. good reviews with tests .. are slim pickings, as such the portfolio of Displays to choose from is rather slim and there are gaps in the budget ranges.

rtings for example which is my preferred site to use (thanks to its good testing method and search and filter tool) 'only' has 91 monitors tested and reviewed.

Of those, under a third (27 to be exact) are what i would consider 'good', most of which are above $400 or £400 depending on the linked pricing, which can mean a display may be shown as under 450 ..but that may be £450 and thus is like $550 in the US .. rtings price filter isnt great tbh.

Anyway i sugest u consider those i linked before , see how much they cost in ur area. Come back with the prices u can get them for and ill give my opinion on which is best for the price u can find them for.

Here are the current lowest prices that I can find:

Asus PG279Q: $479.99  ( I thought this was IPS, not VA.. I could be wrong though )

Asus TUF-VG27: $429.99

The other two aren't readily available and one of them is too expensive for me!

I've taken a look at these two and I have a couple questions.

1. What is the benefit of these over the aforementioned LG 27GL83A

2. Is there a key difference between these and if so what is it? ( And is it justified considering the current price difference? )

Thanks!

Yes my post mistakenly had the PG279Q and Dell S3220 swapped around. I had corrected it prior to your post :)

The LG 32GK850G-B and Dell S3220dgf are VA /// And the Asus PG279Q and Asus TUF VG27AQ are IPS.

Key differences.

here are the comparisons.

LG 27GL83A vs PG279Q

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/lg-27gl83a-b-vs-asus-rog-pg279q/1627/578?usage=3623&threshold=0.1

LG 27GL83A vs VG27AQ

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/lg-27gl83a-b-vs-asus-tuf-vg27aq/1627/1640?usage=3623&threshold=0.1

The most glaring difference is the uniformity, the VG27AQ especially is better in that regard.

AND

Contrast, the 27GL83A has rather poor contrast, whilst the other 2 have much better contrast for IPS panels.

The 27GL83A is a good monitor most certainly for the price however, and it all depends on what aspects matter most to you.

I find , especially with IPS displays, that people tend to complain about BLB and IPS glow a lot, which is why the uniformity of the VG27AQ is especially good.

Comparing the PG279A vs the VG27AQ

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/asus-rog-pg279q-vs-asus-tuf-vg27aq/578/1640?usage=3623&threshold=0.1

IMO i would pick the VG27AQ, its better uniformity and inclusion of basic HDR i think out weigh the slightly better factory calibration and slightly faster pixel response of the PG279Q, however again, its down to what matters to you.

If you dont think the price jump from $380 to $430 is worth the uniformity, contrast and slightly better max frequency , then grab the 27GL83A.

Should have included this in the above post.

@Raaga

This seems to be the Dell S3220DGF that i linked as a VA option.

You should consider this also as its $450.

It has been given an overall worse score but this is VA vs IPS. IPS gains a lot form viewing angles.

Vs the VG27AQ:

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/dell-s3220dgf-vs-asus-tuf-vg27aq/1592/1640?usage=3623&threshold=0.1

In some key areas the S3220 is noticeably better.

Contrast, HDR brightness, uniformity, and its a 10bit panel.

Vs the 27GL83A

https://www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/dell-s3220dgf-vs-lg-27gl83a-b/1592/1627?usage=3623&threshold=0.1

Contrast is significantly better, so is max HDR brightness, uniformity is also substantially better.
