Are you talking about the plastic cover that protects the CPU socket? If so you absolutely can put in a CPU without it.

AM4 doesn't use a socket cover since the pins are on the CPU.

OP, do you mean if you delid the CPU?

You're not making any sense. Post a photo or be more descriptive.

There's 3 parts to a PGA socket, the base with the terminals soldered to the board, the lever, and the sliding top cover which locks the CPU to the socket base. Can a CPU be socketed and powered without this top cover and just a heat sink holding it down or no heat sink mounted if it's a low watt CPU to make sure the board posts.

I'm not sure what's not clear about this question?

It wasn't clear because your description of the part you're talking about was pitiful.

I suppose in theory it shouldn't harm your CPU no, but you run the risk of physically damaging your CPU since it's not secured in place.s

I shouldn't assume someone answering a question knows what they're talking about, my bad. I'll be sure to spoon feed everyone the particulars of CPU socket components which have been in use for 30 years before I ask again.

Maybe next time instead of using the world most general description you can use your head a little bit and call it something a little more accurate (i.e. load plate, CPU retaining bracket, etc), and actually inform us that your motherboard for some reason unbeknownst to us, is missing a very vital piece that's literally included on every motherboard in existence.

It's pretty evident that nobody understood you, so maybe stop being lippy and describe the issue, or figure it out on your own next time.

I'm calling it what it's called in product diagrams and other descriptions of the socket parts. Base, lever, top cover, the 3 parts of a PGA socket. It's not like I'm asking about some obscure part here, it's something that's been in use since Socket 7.

You aren't going to get many involved answers with such a snarkish reply. If you want to play that game, the question you asked is stupid as fuck to begin with. See? That doesn't do anyone any good. The dude was simply asking for clarification about what you meant. No need to be a douche about it. Furthermore I doubt many people on this forum can answer your question adequately because I doubt many if any one has even had any experience doing what you're talking about.

My take on it is you probably can, as long as all electrical contacts of the cpu and socket are met, I don't see why it wouldn't work, but again, I'd be guessing just because I and probably any one else that comes along probably has no experience with what you're asking.

EDIT: To add to this it may not work, as you may not be able to mount the cooler properly, because when you go to do so you may end up putting too much pressure on the socket itself without that top retention plate, as I believe it acts as a sort of barrier for the cpu to sit flush against. So electrically speaking it would probably work, practically though I'd consider getting a new motherboard. Again, guessing ofc. ?

No, pretty sure cooler height would be an issue and it might damage the socket. I've had luck with two 400 series boards swapping a new socket top in place of broken ones.

My question stemmed from the 1 month wait to get parts from China for repair, ended up buying two of each (Lotes and FoxConn) so I have spare on hand if I come across a deal again. The two brands do not interchange and figuring out which is correct is difficult without having seen them a lot before or being able to find a good enough photo that shows branding.
