I am currently buying parts for my skyreach 4 mini and am looking for a decent NVME SSD. I stumbled upon the

Patriot VPN100 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME

however the motherboard has 2 nvme slots one on the front and one in the back. I intend to use the one on the back as it will make adding more storage easier in the future. The SSD comes with a heatsync which will not fit behind the motherboard and between the case. Will the thermals for the drive be fine without the heatsync.

Theoretically? Yes.

Sort of depends on the air flow under the mobo, and the operating temps of the nVME during normal operation (which should be covered by a review of said SSD)

Couldn't he just slap one of those adhesive thermal stickers / tapes on it to improve cooling?

Kinda having the same issue should I ever install a nvme, no space for a heat sink.

Once again, depending on the quality of the pad and the space under the case. Of course, if the pad makes contact *with* the case, then there's your giant case-sized heat sink!

Yeah, haha I thought of that myself too!  ?

so you're saying as long there's no good airflow and the pad does *not* have contact with the case or similar it wouldn't be much of use?

I mean this is kinda a major concern,  some of these drives get up to 70C.

That's ~10-15C more than my GPU currently and kinda counter productive when I'm trying to keep my components as cool as possible lol.

Is that within operating specs of the drive?

If not, then a cooling solution must be found

There ought to be some very thin nvme heatsinks around, how much space (after install of nvme drive) are we working with?

It's just something I read in some reviews and yeah it's within specifications.

Space in my case is kinda hard to judge honestly,  the nvme would go pretty much right under my GPU,  I suppose 1cm max?

I just think it's really not ideal,  dumb motherboard design if you ask me.

You can't really see it but it's right underneath the GPU, so yeah there isn't much space at all and it'd nicely heat up my GPU right away too as I see this.

Agreed, afraid not much I can do for you tho, I'd look into thin (flat) heat sinks for the nVME, see what you can shoehorn on, any little bit helps I think
