The CPU has to support the same socket. This can be confusing though as the most recent Intel consumer socket (LGA 1151) is split in two, LGA 1151 (V1) is for 6th & 7th gen CPU's on the 100/200 series chipset. LGA 1151 (V2) is for 8th & 9th gen CPU's on the 300 series chipset.

Look the motherboard in question up on google, then there should be a link to the CPU support list, it'll list ALL the CPUs that board supports.

Alternatively, go on to PCPP and enter the motherboard in the search box, then when you choose CPUs it will show you the CPUs it supports
