Brand New RTX 2080 Super getting really low frame. Help

ImServs

Im not 100% sure its the GPU. Thats just where im starting. I just bought it today and moved up from an RTX 2070, that was getting the exact same frames. No shaders, though i do use them, but my frames are awful in Minecraft and CoD MW (Only 2 games i really play). Im getting around 380FPS in Minecraft and 80FPS in CoD. To compare, my friend who also uses a 2080 Super is getting 1000FPS in Minecraft and 144FPS in CoD (CoD is capped). Ive used AIDA64 to check mobo temps, they are fine, the cpu is a i9-9940X not OC and the usage/temps is normal. I dont see anything that could be bottlenecking and im not sure where to go from here. I feel like its not the card as the RTX 2070 should of had better frames as well. I am using a 120Hz Acer Predator ultrawide 3440x1440 (setting resolution to 1080P changed nothing)

Thoughts?

Which resolution?

The CPU is bottlenecking. Although it has many cores, the default clocks are low and it's an older architecture.

Wait so the clock speed is killing the frames? i can OC a single core to 4.8GHz but would that really effect frames that much?

I doubt it's a CPU bottleneck, but how much is your CPU utilization while playing? 100%?

EDIT: CPU not GPU

About 8.3% of CPU to Minecraft. 11% Total

Have you tried cleaning the drivers with DDU and reinstalling?

Also as you said your GPU was around 40% it might be a driver issue as @191x7 mentioned. DDu + newest drivers is your best bet.

Windows version? Updated windows recently and windows bugged out. 1903 - tried updating to 1909, still the same.. Actually had a issue where the pc was extremely slow when rebooting and shutting down. Reinstalled using newest image 1909 - Now it works like a charm. Maybe just reinstall, and do it offline. When first logged into windows, stay offline and disable automatic driver installation in: https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/disable-automatic-driver-downloads-on-windows-10

Install all drivers manually, from motherboard support page + nvidia website.

That's alright, but I'd recommend DDU from Safe Mode.

My procedure for DDU-ing -> uninstall the drivers (from the Control Panel or GeekUninstaller), enter Safe Mode, Run DDU to clean the residual files of the drivers, restart to Windows and install the latest drivers.

Chipset (Intel INF) drivers? maybe running IOBit Driver Booster to check if there are updated drivers for something available?

You could try unparking cores (Park Control) and running CPUBalance (both are free from Bitsum).

Also, disabling some Spectre/Meltdown mitigations with InSpectre could help https://www.grc.com/inspectre.htm

Pretty sure your friend is also not running that in 3440x1440.. Do benchmarks, not game FPS as these vary on settings etc. Or put screenshots of game settings then.

Minecraft depends on the world, rendered distances, mods and so on. Terrible for testing a card (btw 300fps is more than any monitor is capable of..) What settings you have on for CoD?? If you have ultra, ray tracing etc, res. scaling over 100% no wonder its below 100FPS.

The 11% CPU usage you are seeing is prob because Minecraft uses mainly 1 core and you are looking at overall CPU percentage.

Post screenshots of your in-game settings, run benchmarks and compare the results. Then you can judge is something is wrong with the card or game settings.

Cheers

Yes but my friend and I are using the same setting for both games. hes getting over double my frames. while the CPU's arent the same the GPU's are. And as I mentioned turning the resolution down to 1080p did nothing for changing the frames. Lowering settings on either game dont seem to change the frames at all either which is the weirdest part.

sadly no changes. My friend thinks it could be a bad motherboard. It is still under extended store warranty. would it be worth swapping it out or is that unlikely to be the issue?

Shouldn't be the mobo. You could run Prime95 Blend stress test to see if everything is alright/stable and if the temperatures are fine.

Shouldn't be the mobo. You could run Prime95 Blend stress test to see if everything is alright/stable and if the temperatures are fine.

ill run a stress test tomorrow and monitor the temps. while i had yet to consider this, mostly cause i didnt think it was all that bad. My cpu being X299 is in a quad channel motherboard, and i have 32gb of ram, x4 8gb sticks, all sitting on the right side. I know im supposed to space them out for quad channel but could that be causing the issue?

It shouldn't be the cause. The difference between dual and quad channel isn't something that would be severely noticable in games.

What are your 3DMark Firestrike and TimeSpy scores? That might give a hint weather the performance is where it should be.

Firestrike  https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/41393107?
Time Spy https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/41393358?

Note: Just noticed my RAM speed reset to base clock for the 100th time. Idk if that could ruin results.

The 3DMark scores are in the range of the normal scores for the 2080S, so your overall performance shouldn't be suffering.

Maybe those games are supposed to run like that? Can you try the 2080S in a different PC to compare performance?
