Laptop prioritizes Intel HD graphics over Nvidia GTX 850M

Hello to all,

As described in the title, my laptop doesn't use its full potential by simply not using the Nvidia card. I have tried disabling HD graphics in the device manager, but then it still doesnt run on the GTX. (I wonder what its running on lol)

So i tried switching it with the Nvidia Control Panel. Here i can select what GPU its supposed to use by clicking restore(bottom right) and then selecting desired GPU. After hitting apply it always switches back to the "integrated processor" and not the selected "High performance Nvidia Processor". I also tried setting "rules" so whenever a certain program is opened it should use the GTX GPU for it. Taskmanager doesnt show any activity on the GTX GPU thought...

The only time ill get a sign that its using the Nvidia is a short burst to 100% and then 0%. Also shown in attached foto.

I have attached files showing the device manager, Nvidia Control Panel, and the Intel Graphics Control Panel.

I dont know what to do anymore so im looking for help :) If there's anymore information that might be helpful i'll happily provide it.

Cheers,

DaYn95

It's only going to use the nvidia GPU when it needs it, it routes it through the intel graphics to save on battery power, which is probably why you can't disable the intel iGPU.

term for it is nvidia optimus, long as you have the right drivers it should automatically use the nvidia GPU under load. run a game in a window and see what task manager shows next to it.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

That would brick the laptop as you would then have no video out.

Ok so ive just restarted the PC multiple times until under the Nvidia Control Panel it said that the preferred GPU is the Nvidia one.

If you really want apps to use the NVIDIA GPU, you can set this up in the NVIDIA Control Panel for apps to prefer using one or the other.

I also added the games i play to that list and now it seems to be working again. It used to work just fine until today it switched to the Intel HD GPU. Dont know why it did that.

Guess i just have to restart it until it does what its supposed to? I can clearly see the difference between it using the Intel HD and the GTX. Its just so much worse.

I hope its fixed for now. Thank all of you for your input!
