Secondary drive thats always spinning for no reason.

image.png.d33a7a838d6f8ef87bd7e5ad39ccd695.png

It was set to 20 minutes before and im thinking thats probably for a reason.

So any negatives to making that 5 or even 1?

Will it damage the hard drive more because it stops and starts a lot?

Or less because its spinning total time of its life a lotttt less.

The bearings should be well lubricated, so starting and stopping shouldn't put appreciable wear on the drive. If you're not accessing the drive much, it's better to let it stop after just a few minutes to save power and lower noise output. Just realize it takes a second or two for some drives to spin up from stopped, so there will be a bit of latency if you need to access something from a stopped hard drive.

on a technical level starting and stopping would wear the drive more due to the amount of effort and energy to start the drive is greater than leaving it running.

In a perfect world it shouldn't be enough effort to justify not turning it on and off a lot. but I'd rather leave a drive on that have it start and stop every few minutes simply due to drives being not made so well anymore.
