Any danger to gaming while the lid is closed?

Depends on what kind of laptop you got, but as long as your computer is not prematurely shutting down due to overheating you should be fine.

Just watch temperatures to see if it is thermal throttling (even if it is there shouldn't be any risks of damage, just lower performance).

nah, if that was the case, phones would overheat and break screens all the time.

each manufacturer publishes tolerances for temperature range, review those.

But yes, heat can damage LCD screens absolutely but would have to be outside the manufacture tolerance.

I dont think the temperatures closing the lid would approach 50 Celsius which is the upper limit for LCD technology. 50 Celsius is 122 Fahrenheit. if you want to check get a Infrared Thermometer, and check to be sure.  the only way this would be a concern approaching this limit is if laptops fans for cooling or vents would be blocked by closing the laptop lid

My brother had his monitor standing directly next to his PC's exhaust and now you can clearly see that side of the monitor being much darker and some kind of yellow when it should be white. 

 

I'd honestly keep it open.

Asked Asus directly and they said it was fine.

 

Contrary would have surprised me, but you never are too careful.

For what it's worth, I've done this many times on my old HP.  The CPU in that thing reaches mid 90s at the best of times (with the lid open), and I've noticed no damage to the hardware or display.
